In 1827, the French mathematician and physicist, Joseph Fourier, calculated that the mean temperature of the earth without any atmosphere should be -15°C and he described the function of the atmosphere in retaining heat, like a hothouse or greenhouse.
It was Irishman John Tyndall who, in the 1860s, established that nitrogen and oxygen, which together comprise 99% of our atmosphere, play no part in regulating Earth's temperature by altering its radiation of infrared energy into space. He discovered that methane and CO2 are potent absorbers of infra-red radiation. By warming the atmosphere, they also increase the amount of water vapour it contains. Since water vapour also absorbs infra-red energy, this further increases the earth's temperature. A Swedish scientist called Svante Arrhenius reported in 1896 that CO2 emissions from Europe's burgeoning factories could increase global temperatures. Arrhenius predicted that a doubling in the concentration of atmospheric CO2 would cause earth's temperature to rise by 5°C. He also predicted that burning coal would raise the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere by 50% and thought that this would take 2 or 3 millennia.
In fact, atmospheric CO2 has risen by 35% in just 11 decades.
The greenhouse effect has been know since the 1800s. Concern about the build up of CO2 in the atmosphere and the potential effects on global temperature and climate has been the subject of speculation over the years, but will modern instrumentation and the ability to document the rising concentrations, James Hansen, atmospheric scientist with NASA, is credited with raising the alarm in the late 70s to 1980. He is still working on it a NASA Godard Institute for Space Studies.
Professor Roger Revelle, a professor that former V.P. Al Gore studied under, delved into this problem, but it was first researched by19th century by Svante Arrhenius, and he calculated that the planet would warm 5 degrees centigrade for doubling carbon dioxide. This 5% means 1 degree at the equatorial regions and 12 degrees at polar regions, however. For the first time in known history, Polar Bears are DROWNING because they can not find the ice that they used to roam around on. Global warming IS real, just not what Politicians currently in office and paid media would like the public to believe.
Some of the other answers are quite good, but credit needs to be given to Guy Callendar, who in 1938 expanded on the work of Arrhenius and actually detected the increase of CO2.
Also the work of Roger Revelle should not be underestimated. Along with Hans Suess he published a very important paper on the carbon dioxide buffering in the ocean, and then later hired Charles David Keeling to make carbon dioxide measurements. It is the "Keeling Curve" that is today the backbone of global warming theory.

Al Gore invented global warming, shortly after he invented the internet.
