I'll be perfectly honest. I don't feel the importance of art to society is quite what it used to be. I also believe that different forms of art are more prevalent today. Centuries ago, people would pay vast sums of money for paintings and sculptures. Today, art can more aptly be found in modeling and photography. Think about it. Advertisements are everywhere these days and the almost all of them have at least some sort of photography in them. People aren't stimulated anymore my static objects made from stone or that sit on a canvas. Today, society thrives motion and vibrance. It's all about what moves and how it appeals. So, in answer to your question, I think that the value of art is still there, but for a different type of art.

It was used in making your computer, the logos you see all the time, and the CD covers you buy. It is in the clothes you wear, the eyeglasses you purchase, and the words of a book you read.

No matter what something is, at one point it was just words on a page, or a picture that had to be thought up by a creative individual. Nothing is just purely functional. Even Dada, which was a anti-art movement, is considered to be an art movement.

Art isn't just a painting on a wall anymore. Just look around you at all the stuff that had to be designed by someone.
