I know that alot of Business are going down because of the economy, but even before the economy went down, the American car industry seemed to be lacking in their vehicle products. I am in my later 20`s now, but even when i was growing up in the late 80`s and early 90`s i can remember that there were more models being made. like for example (GM) BUICK had more models then just the 3 that they have out now the Lucerne,Enclave,& LaCrosse. and don`t get me started with Cadillac, everyone in my family either has one, or had one in their life time, but now all Cadillac has is 5 models. my parents always did Ford products like Mercury which i have heard that they might be discontinued in the next couple of years, but i remember when Mercury use to have at least eight vehicles. and even with Chrysler, I used to like them, but now i don`t like their styles. I used to love the New Yorker and if u wanted something a little fancier then the LHS, the Concorde etc. but what my question is, besides reliability what has happened to our car industry? and why are they asking the government to let them borrow an extra $50Million dollars?
The former Big 3's Corporate leadership was arrogant and squandered their lead in the marketplace. They are reaping what they have sowed into the marketplace. They have made their bed and they are lying in it. They have set in stone their position, and now they must break the mold. The former Big 3 were insular to change, trends and nuances in the automotive industry because the agenda was short term profits inside of year on year profitability. They did not have a long term plan versus Toyota. The American car brands had varying degrees of quality and workmanship within the same car family. They built cars like their was a tomorrow. They fired people who thought out of the box and squelched the dissenters. Bob Lutz has lived long enough to see this go full circle. Now known as the car czar, people like him where put on ice in the ranks of Chrysler, Ford and GM. Carol Shelby could be the honorary nameplate on the performance oriented Plymouth Horizon and the Ford Mustang, but he too had to leave the car manufacturer to build the type of cars he felt should be built in the first place. Both of these car guys were the exception in automotive manufacturing, not the standard. Competition has made these two iconic car guys gain inner circle acceptance. Now Lutz wants to retire and GM doesn't want to let him go. Shelby has his best years behind him and GM is considering a merger with Chrysler. Ford's U.S. manufacturing plants have to be retooled to build cars, since they have been heavily invested in building the Ford F150 year after year; millions of trucks. This change costs billions in research and development as well as factory retooling and space. Right now, loans are hard to come by. It is not feasible for Ford to ship their European car line to the States, which is the type product line they need to compete globally. Ford is so strapped for cash, they are looking to sale 20% stake in the money making relationship they have had for more than a decade with Mazda. The mighty have fallen.
