My home doesn't have any insulation in the attic or walls. If I only add insulation in the attic, how much of a difference in terms of temperature should I expect in the summer and winter?
Keeping your attic warm or cool
Most heat is transferred trough the ceiling, so insulating it is always the priority, but its impossible to give you numbers for temperature. Adding cellulose insulation in your attic is easy, you can do it yourself. Typically if you buy more than 20 bags of cellulose from HD or Lowes they rent you the insulation blower machine free of charge. Just make sure you don't cover your sofit vents with insulation. Since your house is old, you may want to ensure it has proper ventilation since this is very important for energy efficiency. Your walls can be insulated, although its not fun. I had an old house like this where we removed a row of vinyl siding from the entire perimeter of the house, drilled 2.5" houses into each stud bay, pumped in cellulose in then filled the holes with spray foam and put the siding back on.
Insulating a home is a very wise decision to save money on energy bills and makes the house a lot more comfortable. The attic is no.1 in priority because in the winter the heat in a room always goes to cold which is the walls and ceilings. If you are sitting down in the house on a cold day and when you rise you notice the upper part of the room is warm, then the attic isn't insulate. No. 2 is the walls. After insulating the walls you will notice that you don't need as much heat to keep the house warm. This works well in the summer time by not needing as much AC to keep the house cool as well. Insulation doesn't add warmth or cold. It just helps to hold and prevent it from escaping.
The insulation acts a barrier for heat and cold. The better your house is insulated, the better it is for winter heating and summer cooling costs. By insulating your house, you can recoup those losses in a matter of a few years. I highly recommend you insulate your house.
Adding insulation in just the attic will help tremendously. Most of your heat rises and goes through the roof, costing you a lot of money if you live in a cold weather climate, it also helps to keep heat in the attic during hot weather. For the best protection you should insulate your attic, crawl space, and you can have insulation blown into your walls
you save a lot of money. Most the heat would go through the roof. Just make sure the roof has airs space between the eaves and roof ridge.
