"Canada's second-largest airline warned yesterday that it could cut back on flights through Toronto's Lester B. Pearson International Airport if user fees there continue to rise, although it conceded it might have little room to manoeuvre.
“Obviously, we go where we can make the most money, and if it turns out that Toronto is not the most profitable place to be, then we won't be there as much,” Clive Beddoe, chairman of WestJet Airlines Ltd. of Calgary, said yesterday in a quarterly conference call with analysts." Whether it is an AIF or additional landing fees charged to the airline - isn't the point that it is us (the consumer) who is paying for everything (and thus getting screwed).
They should just scrap the landing fee and put it all into the AIF charge. Then at least there would be some obvious record of what was charged. Obvious enough for the consumer to become more vocal about it. I congratulate all the airlines that are taking this strong stand against excessive airport fee increases, particularly Clive Beddoe and his WestJet team. He has campaigned tirelessly for some sanity and reality to be re-introduced into the Canadian world of taxes, airport fees and user surcharges.
Mr. Turpen's behaviour at the GTAA has been very poor (the IATA ban is particularly offensive), and I sure hope he remembers that the airlines are his customers. However, I don't think that having Mr. Collenette intervene will make things any better. The GM at Oakland Airport in California recently stated that the cost of using his airport was (roughly) $3.50 per person vs. SFO's $17 (or something similar). He attributed the growth at OAK to the airport's ability to control its costs!
Good luck to the airlines fighting these increases!
Wasn't it not too long ago that GTAA were saying that the expansion was not going to need an AIF?? My have times changed. The problem here is that someone has to pay for the building now that it's being built - I guess that it will be passengers one way or another so long as they fly YYZ. If more leave then then we go down the slippery slope.
How much does getting a small tattoo on your hip/stomach hurt?
