Want to try Acela Express , what's the best way to get discount fare?(same as shuttle fares on DL or US) Also, what extras do they have in the first class? Thanks!
I dont think there are discounts on the Acela Express except for some corporate deals. The best deal so far on the Amtrak Excela Regional, Metroliner etc is this one: http://www.veteransadvantage.com/partners/AmtrakExplanation.html
I saved about $56 about days ago Wiln DE to EWR ($112 RT dropped to $56 on an Acela Regional). It costs about $22/yr to join.

I would like to know how to get discount fares as well for Acela.
I know that in F class you get a meal plus free drinks, that is worse the most airline's coach meal, and a bit extra maneuver room in the car. Plus access to ClubAcela, which is often lower i temrs of food and tv availability than most airline lounges, but often plenty of seating to sprea out. Getting F is almost not worth it for me anymore. I mean it is one car and you know exactly which was to go to to board, but it is one car and often fills up wherewas in Business class there are like 6 cars and you can really spead out in terms of seating and privacy becuase there ar more options for everyone to choose from.
I wish they would bring back assigned seating. They used to have that but not anymore.

Most days and times (except say Friday and Sunday p.m.) you can get a 10% discount as an AAA member.
I've yet to find any discounts on the Acela, except for Senior Citizen and AAA which appear to only be valid on weekend or certain off peak trains, and children's discounts.
Business class seating is 2 and 2 across, while first class seating is 1 and 2 across. Also, I believe business class has 36 rows, while first class has 30 rows. So you get a wider seat with more leg room in first class.
First class passengers (also AMEX Platinum and Centurion cardholders) can use Amtrak's ClubAcela lounges in BOS, PHL, NYC and DC. Its a nice lounge with free softdrinks, juices and snacks, free local phone calls, and free internet access. At least in NY they announce your track in the club well before they announce it to the masses, so you can beat the crowds to the escalator.
On board you get a decent meal (I find breakfast better than dinner) served on china at your seat, and complimentary (and unlimited) beverages, including alcoholic beverages.
Between BOS and NYC going first class still costs less than the cost of the shuttle (if you don't have a corporate discount), so I've been taking the train in first class for almost 18 months, and since 9/11 have used the train exclusively.
If you find someone who is a "Select" level elite member in Amtrak's rewards program they might be able to share the space available upgrades and ClubAcela lounge passes that they obtained when they qualified. That could be (depending on your friend) a free or less costly way to try out first class.
