I just bought my first home at the end of August. Its now starting to get cold and have been insulation as much as possible. My question has to deal with my crawlspace. My crawlspace is not dirt its concrete, it also has the furnace underneath the house also. The previous owners blocked the vents in the crawlspace with insulation. Do I need to keep them blocked or should unblock them. I'm afraid of the crawlspace getting too cold and pipes bursting and making house colder. I live in Tinton Falls NJ. Thanks for any advice. Why? Because in the summer moisture can build up, and opening the vents allows fresh air to remove the moisture. In the winter the moisture is frozen, and keeping vents open causes heat loss (as well as the possibility of pipes freezing if any are in the floor).
To avoid moisture problems, open in the summer and closed in the winter. If the previous owners had them blocked, I have to assume that the furnace was still getting enough air to operate properly. In the summer, the humidity levels are high and you want air circulation to prevent mold.
