I booked a rental on thrifty.com (economy) from Thrifty's Union Station in downtown Toronto last week. The quoted rate was $27.99 (with estimated total of $34-35).

When I got to the rental counter, I was presented with a rental contract of $39 total. The difference was a "VMF - Vehicle Maintenance Fee" of $3.95.

The lowly clerk tried to explain that the $34-35 I was quoted in my reservation was only an "estimate". By this time, I was steaming as I said "how can you include a $0.6 tax and not a $3.95 fee as part of your estimate".

Of course, I am also not impressed about the fact that the guy had other full-size cars/premium cars which he would not give to me without a "surcharge". Of all the times I have rented from National, I was always given the opportunity to decline a minivan.

Organizing the vehicle paperwork, cleaning the interior and exterior, and performing a maintenance check is a great place to start this process.

  • Hi everyone,

Sorry for not responding to this earlier.

This was about Thirfty. My reference to National was to merely indicate that I am a frequent renter and I had never seen anything like this.

These guys are done as far as my business dealings with them.

  • The moment for angry phone calls/emails has arrived. Heat up the ether between your phone/keyboard and Thrifty, even reserving the right (too late?) to dispute the CC charge on the basis of misrepresentation (along with the potential to change your loyaltiees (if your record is long enough to impress).

  • I had this charge in Edmonton and contacted corporate who sent me $50 in vouchers. No other company charges for windshield washer fluid (this is what they said this was for, amongst other things). Corporate said the charge was inappropriate but obviously the situation continues. I will NOT be renting from them ever again regardless the rate (already used the vouchers). If you are going to charge for that you HAVE TO TELL ME IN ADVANCE when I can reasonably make other choices and not foist such a charge as a bait and switch.

If you are really steamed you may want to file a complaint with Industry Canada's Competition Bureau. See www.strategis.gc.ca

Let us know if you pursue it!

  • This must be a Canadian operation situation. I believe that in the US if your bill doesn't match your quote, they are facing some serious issues with government regulations. The government allows them to split out all the BS charges to maintain their "daily rate", but they are required to itemize and disclose all of the BS up front. Personally, I think that state and federal taxes are the only thing that should be allowed to be added on. Franchise recoupment fees and license fees are part of the cost of doing business as a rental car company and should be reflected in the basic price of the service offered! Some hotels will credit you if you refuse your "free" paper, but they don't add a .50 line item for the newspaper!

  • Is this about National or Thrifty?

I think only Thrifty. In my case it was Thrifty and I have rented from National recently with no such fee.
