Upgrading with a North American Upgrade Certificate

Welcome to:hznm.com

  • Please help this first-time upgrader. So, I have a few North American Upgrade Certificates, and seeing as I'm flying all the way from YYC to YYT in about ten days, a distance of just a little under 3000 miles, I think that making use of a couple of my North American Upgrade Certificates might be a good idea.

Are there any things for which I should look out? Will Seat Counter provide me with a useful resource? As I am an Aeroplan Prestige member, and as I have a $100 credit for Air Canada travel that I would like to use, do I have to call into Air Canada and get them to process said credit, incurring a telephone booking fee along the way?

Like most of you, I wish that the XM program were finished by now, as I am getting a little tired of paying good money to fly Air Canada, only to end up on worn-out, tired aircraft. Cabin crew seem to be much happier and more helpful than ever; it's too bad the equipment is frequently tatty.

    Thank you for your assistance!

  • This year's NA certs are good for one continuous/connecting journey unlike previous years when a transcon required two of them.

If you input the cert number, when you search for flights, there will be a symbol indicating which flights have upgrade inventory available at the time of booking. This of course would apply immediately for LATITUDE fares, as explained above, but it you're booking TANGO+ you should look out for flights showing enough I-class still available, and likely to be available, when your upgrade window opens 2-days prior to the flight as a PRESTIGE.

As for using your credit, check the MCO sticky to determine how to redeem it.

  • Warning: this is a good method to determine which flights have I space, but make sure that when you actually make your booking you do not have this option selected. There is a bug in the system right now that will not show the cheapest Latitude fare when the "show upgrade" option is selected.

What a shocking, little cheeky monkey. Another bug in the system. Shocking. ;)

  • - book online, since phone agent Latitude fares can be much higher.

    - upgrade online as well, if you like. You'll need your NA cert number, so have it with you when you book.
I'm in a similar situation like the OP where I will be using my NA certs for YYZ-LAS-YYZ Dec travel. This is what we'll most likely be doing.

    - book Latitude fares to use NA certs. If you are going to book the non-stop, it's so bloody expensive to begin with I'd say spending an extra few hundred for Latitude+upgrade is good value for money, if you have the money.

    - use http://publicbackup.com/shared/flyertalk/availability/ to find flights with I class available for upgrades.

    - book online, since phone agent Latitude fares can be much higher.

Use the instructions here to redeem your credit: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=22316

As a side note, since you are booking Latitude, there is no booking fee. But you are not going to use the telephone at all since better prices might be online.

Only relevant for those few international destinations that allow SWU certs on B/H fares, since a prestige cannot upgrade off a domestic Tango+ fare, which takes a SSWU
