I've been under extreme stress lately and have been waking up every half hour, almost on the half hour. It's bizarre but I am dreaming so I guess I'm hitting the REM phase.. then I wake up at 5 or 6am and can't get back to bed.
I tried Tylenol PM sleep aid for the first time and am frustrated that I still woke up the same way all last night. How do I make it stop? Thanks two weeks in my dorm, and I still find it hard to fall asleep :: 15 posts - 14 authors - Last post: Sep 3They will knock you out in a much more natural way than Tylenol PM or other sleep aids. Tylenol PM's active "sleep" ingredient is diphenhydramine better know as Benadryl. It is an antihistamine (think anti-allergy reaction drug). The common side effect of most antihistamine's is drowsiness. In any of the over-the counter sleep aids -the drowsiness"side effect" of the diphenhydramine is being used as the desired effect.
However, in some, especially younger people, Benadryl can have what is called a "paradoxical effect." This means that, instead of the medication making you sleepy, it could cause the opposite! Look on a box of regular Benadryl...it says "marked drowsiness may occur" then one line later says "excitability may occur." This is what could have happened to you or it could be that your stress level is so high that your body just couldn't relax even with the "help" of the Benadryl. One Tylenol PM when I'm on the road is just enough. http://www.talkleft.com/story/2008/5/23/13456/4766HOME |
Perhaps you need to work on the source of your stress...and try to eliminate the problems from interrupting your sleep. Take a warm bath and calm your mind before bed.
Good luck! Sleep well soon!
