Does anyone know if the transfer maximums apply to certificate redemptions for retail stores and restaurants. I know 5000 miles for $50 certificate may not be a great value...but i'm a recent college grad: I need to eat! I already transfered 25 000 miles to United. I wonder if I can transfer in another 5 000 Continental miles to trade for an Olive Garden gift card or if I'd have to wait until the next calendar year.

  • No - at present - there are no maximums for the certs - just the mileage transfers. But, as the rules say they can do what they like with no notice - be warned.

    I'm speechless!

Granted, you can move another 25K in january, but what are you going to do about the other 375,000? This really doesn't seem fair. Amtrak should at least permit you to reverse your transaction and move the miles back to CO. Have you called to complain?

  • I'm a bit confused. Is it possible to transfer 25K into Amtrak from United and then transfer that same 25K into Continental, or does all of this constitute 50K in transfers which is now not possible?

  • This sounds like 25k Max for anything? Has anyone called them? Seems like the higher limit should be for anyone who has their credit card.
*Amtrak limits the number of Points that a Member can redeem for Program Partners or Merchants frequent traveler points and/or miles in a calendar year (including but not limited to United MileagePlus, Continental OnePass, Midwest Express Frequent Flyer and Hilton HHonors). The yearly limit for Amtrak Guest Rewards Select Members is 50,000 Points. The yearly limit for standard Amtrak Guest Rewards Members is 25,000 Points.

Nope, you can't transfer 25K to UA and another 25K to CO. The total is limited to 25K per year.

I'm suprised there hasn't been more howling from the folks who moved big mileage balances (eg From Amex), then got stuck when AMTRAK shut off the outflow. Have they been allowing exceptions?

Thanks for the clarification. I know that people have posted in the Continental and United threads about getting caught in the middle. One poster moved 125K from Continental to United only to get stuck with the 25K limit. He/she now has 100K left with Amtrak. That would be a real bummer given the fact that Amtrak never notified us of the change in terms. This isn't exactly a good way to win friends--especially given the financial status of Amtrak.

  • If you would like to extend some more sympathy - I transferred 400,000 from CO! And am now stuck with 25,000.

Not only did they impose it without notice, they have imposed retrospectively as any transfers done before the rule change are counted toward the maximum for the year.

  • I've called and written - they are simply not interested! They see it that they have followed their rules and that's it.
This should perhaps be a warning to everyone.
I am also not sure whether the 'Year' is a calendar year or simply a year after the first transfer, in which case I will not be able to move any more for several months.
I am leaving them there and waiting until your new Congress seems ready to kill off Amtrak, at which point I will try and turn them in to vouchers before they die.

Now, this is starting to not make sense. There are hotel partner awards that cost more than 25K. How would one redeem one of those? I think the rep was confused and the limitation applies only to transfers, not partner awards, IMHO.

That's how I read it as well.

    dgordon,

Unfortunately, the MBNA credit card doesn't come w/complimentary Select member status, only the standard status.

  • NO they're not allowing exceptions and when you query this they simply ignore the emails.

I fell totally screwed by Amtrak on this and really will not be using them anytime ever.

As of now, it clearly says "in a calendar year". As always, they can change it again, with or without notice.
