I was just doing a little house cleaning and figured that I should consolidate the old Resources Thread before you had to search through a bunch of pages to find the link you want.

Not a lot of soccer-just the penalty kick study that's been talked about here. But it's good to see the various methodology used-might provide insight re: how to use metrics in soccer.
Math terms got you confused? Want to be even more confused?
Reference sources:

For an easier to read source, look up the term in any encyclopedia, a decent free one is found at www.wikipedia.org.

Baseball Prospectus (http://www.baseballprospectus.com/) is of course the mothership of this line of thinking and study, closely affiliated with Bill James.
Baseball Primer (http://www.baseballthinkfactory.org/) Another industry standard on par with Baseball Prospectus.
Football Outsiders (http://www.footballoutsiders.com) The 'other' football, great site with really thought out and researched stats on American Football. They've also been very good to us here on Bigsoccer and were nice enough to link (http://www.footballoutsiders.com/links.php) us from their site.
Alleyoop.com (http://www.alleyoop.com/) Basketball metric site which has developed a very interesting Player Efficiency Rating, something I think could be mirrored in soccer if we ever had access to the same kind of stats they do in basketball, such as turnovers etc etc.
82games.com (http://www.82games.com/) Another basketball metric site, featuring the 'Ronald rating' similar to hockey's +/- stat.
Puckerings.com (http://www.puckerings.com/index.html) Hockey metrics site which desirves great mention because of the similarities between the game of hockey and soccer. Not as polished as the other sites listed but is a defanite kindred spirit in that the creator of the site is likewise dealing with the mother of all niches. Here (http://www.puckerings.com/research/analysis.html) he talks about the thought process of stats in hockey and the differences (http://www.puckerings.com/research/analysis.html#baseball) between the game and baseball.* I would consider this article a must read because it does a great job of breaking down sabermetric type thinking for the uninitiated, including some basic mathmatical definitions. World Cup 2010 European Qualifiers Spreadsheet now at:

Regards to all

I have just put together a spreadsheet to help me keep track of the World Cup 2010 European Qualifying matches:
http://cid-b6212155f8f699d3.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/Files%204%20U/World%20Cup%20European%20Qualifiers.xls
The top team in each of the 9 groups automatically go through, but the playoff places are for the 8 next best teams in all 9 groups, not including the 6th placed team in groups 1-8 (which have 6 teams, unlike group 9 with only 5). This is decided on total points and presumably goal difference in the case of a tie. It would seem that to be the second best team in group 9 would be a great disadvantage since you would have played two less games than teams in group 1-8..
Try out my spreadsheet and see what you think.
Hi Guys,
Please add www.thefootballreview.co.uk to the list. We are hoping to do for football what football outsiders and Baseball prospectus have done for American football and Baseball

Hi Kalpurush.
Thanks for the comment. Yes the spreadsheet is protected, not for any reasons of ownership protection, but just to make sure that the formulas are not chaged by accident making the spreadsheet difficult to put right again for those who are unfamiliar with Excel. I will put an unprotected version on my webpage if you would like to play around with it:

Hi,
I think, that this site is good for this theme:
http://soccer-bet-assistant.com
There are more soccer statistics european leagues.
I am starting a project that I call The Soccer Database Project. Here's a link:
http://www.phoenixv.dk/soccer/
It intends to convert the information from the RSSSF match logs into searchable databases. This should vastly improve the possibilites for extensive research with large sample sizes.
There are already a couple of databases available containing a significant amount of data. Check it out and let me know if you have any suggestions!
Ironically I have a site i used that is www.footballdatabase.com
Any sources of MLS referee stats available? I know the stats are up with the preview so presumably they are compiled somewhere. Previews disappear on Mlsnet.com come gametime.
Thanks for any help.

They're in the MLS Facts & Records book.
Good one.. seems the workbook is protected.... :)

maybe you should add footballdatabase.eu (http://www.footballdatabase.eu/) to this list. It's a very huge statistics site.
