So my artist is wonderful and is almost done with a huge 18-hour piece. It's going to have set me back about 2,000 dollars. I'm happy, and I plan on giving him one big tip when it's done next week. Should I give him an extra $400 when we're done? Or should I have been tipping him all along?
Does $400 seem like enough for long and intricate work?
perfect 400$ is spot on a great tip
im an apprentice tattoo artist and if i got that i would be hugley satisfied
15 - 20 % as you go along is the polite thing. So your $400 on $2000 worth of work is right on.
Congrats on the new Tattoo.
i think its great you are tipping him they deserve it is said to tip them like a waitress 10% for them but it all depends on how much work they do but they will appericate anything you can give them not everyone tips them even though they should good luck and congrads on your new tat
One question: is there a sign in the shop that mentions tipping? Or, perhaps, anyone you can ask on the QT if you should have? Although I can't imagine not tipping after each session, that's mostly due to a sign mentioning "tipping is cool", plus commentary from friends who went to the shop I frequent. Otherwise, minimally, you have plausible deniability. Since you're almost done, I'd wait. Your so close to the end it might seem like you forgot. You might want to check with another person in the shop if your artist has commented about this, if only as a forewarning to yourself.
As far as amount, I think it's fair. It's 20%, which considering some people's is a "lot". It's what I tend to tip. I suppose some people might object to $400, saying it's big. I suppose you could just think of it as 40 $10 tips. :)
400 dollars is a veeerrrry good tip. unless your artist ranks up there with dave fox, he probably doesnt expect a tip, most don't. my fiance is a well respected artist and an amazing one too if i may add, and he never expects a tip, because most people don't. but its highly apprieciated. so tip as much as you want. 400 dollars- perfect.
I cannot imagine not tipping your tattoo artist. We tip waiters, valet, your hairstylist.....tipping someone who is putting their artwork permanently on your body using needles seems like a good idea! I always tip 20%. I have tipped as I go - after each sitting. But that is just a personal preferance. My artist very much appreciates the tips and the side benefit is he doesn't charge me for custom artwork because we tip well.
So to me $400 seems right on for what he's done. Especially if you are happy with it!
