  • A lot. It always hurts. Always. If you want one badly enough, that will overpower the fear of pain.

  • I have Tattoos from the private area to the arms. It's nothing you won't be able to handel, it's a right of passage I guess you could say. It has a burning, sensation, with a feeling like you've been scratched over and over in the area you get it. It gets like sore when they shade it in, but believe me you'll handel it just fine. A smaller Tattoo will be less irritating I guess you could call it. When they finish the soreness and irritation that it feels like will be gone in a few days. The genitals have a few areas, along with the pubic area, the touchiest I guess is in the pubic area by the bend of the leg. The legs and arms are nothing, as for the head chest neck, and other areas you'll have hear from someone else. I have M&M s tattooed on the private area up to just below the naval, a picture of Jesus on my calf, and Yosemmity Sam on the left side, with a Devil on the left butt which don't hurt, and a Tattoo on each shoulder. There is a story behind the M&M,s we won't go there Good luck Have a Merry Christmas and keep our Troops in prayer and Light a candel for those who can't be with us. God Bless

  • For me, the most irritating part was the outline. It does hurt sometimes, but just breathe - don't hold your breath, that just makes it worse. The shading and color were a breeze. No pain or discomfort there. For me, anyways.

My first tattoo was a little high up on my right butt cheek. My second was on my left shoulder (scapula). They both were equal in pain/discomfort. Of course I have a low threshold for pain. That will factor in it for you as well.

Just to reference the comments made by cclover3 -- I was 20 when I got my first tattoo and 42 when I got my second one. I have no regrets at all.

  • ok if you want it on a body part that has fat it wont hurt as much but if you can litteraly see your nerves and your a stick it will hurt alot

  • Why are you thinking about getting one?Like that one girl said when you get older you will regret it!!!BADLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Lets see, you're being poked continuously with a needle for a period of time.
That doesn't sound painful to me at all!

  • DOn't get a tattoo!!! YOu might think it's cool now, but wait til your 40 and will totally regret it!!! IF you do get a tattoo it's going to hurt you in the head.MENTALLY!

  • i have mine right at the base of my neck right on the lowest vertebra, i have heard that the closer to bone it is the more it will hurt but mine did not hurt at all. it was more of an irritation to me. i guess it depends on the person but for me it was nothing.

  • You want to know how much tattoos hurt, huh? Well the answer is quite simple. A LOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • it feels like getting stuck by a needle over and over, the outline huts the most.
i always tell people it only hurts as bad as you want the tattoo, if you really want it you will deal with the pain, you can take some tylenol before you go.

  • It will vary from person to person. I have three: a small celtic knot on my hip bone (typical first), tribal/celtic uv tattoo wrapping around my wrist, and about twelve hours of work covering my right thigh. Each one was a different feeling, and what you feel will depend on the placement and design.

If you're getting anything like a typical first tattoo, it will be small and mainly require outlining. The outlining usually hurts the worst, and feels like you're repeditively dragging a saftey pin across your skin. Shading has a completely different feeling to it. The only way I can describe it is like slapping a sunburn. You feel heat more than anything else. And it's a very cool feeling.

Placement-wise, the worst places are going to be along the ribs, the top of the feet and hands, the inside of the wrist, and the knees. Scar tissue hurts like hell too. But the pain isn't unbearable, and if it's your first, you won't feel much of it because of the adreneline rush.

One weird thing I've found out is that it hurts worse when you drink or take any painkillers before getting it done. Stay sober. It will make the experience more pleasant, and it will hurt less. Alcohol will thin your blood, and you will also be more likely to bleed out the ink, which will require you to go back and get it touched up.

The last thing I'm going to stress is that you get what you pay for. Look around before deciding where to go. Whatever you get will be etched into your skin permanently. You don't want to go to someone who has horrible skills just because you'll save a hundred bucks. Take a look at the portfolios of the artists and decide who's style fits the tattoo you want. Look at the details, the shading, and the quality of the lines. A good example of a great tattoo artist is Tim Victim. I highly recommend looking at some of his work; it will give you an idea of a GOOD tattoo artist.

Sorry this is so long. I hate seeing people with good design ideas that have been horribly done. I hope things go well! And Please remember to tip your artist!

  • Congrats! You are take the plunge to get yourself inked. in general, it is less painful on the fleshy areas like the back and more painful on bony areas like the ribcage.

I have some free materials which you may need -- available for a limited time only! good luck!
