Sore lower back where hips meet back. Could it be from...?

  • This might be a stupid question (but I'd like to think that (almost) NO question is a stupid question. I think I'm a little papranoid about this because my mom was having lower back pain and just last week she went to the DR and she a little bone loss.
I am 28...and recently my lower back has been hurting on and off- not terriibly, but a dull ache. Yesterday I had it almost all day. In all honestly, I'm working on my posture- I don't think I sit properly, especially when I'm at the computer. I also have an almost 7 mos old who is almost a permanent fixture on my hip. Can you get back pain from carrying around your son (he's only about 16-17 pounds right now)?

  • Carrying around a child of that weight can certainly cause back pain, especially if your not bending to pick him up properly (which is usually the case). I doubt your having issues with bone loss, your mother is a more likely candidate for this because of her age. Just take a bit of a break from carrying him (as much) for a couple days to rest your back muscles, get your hubby/bf to give you a lower back rub, continue paying attention to your posture and make sure when your picking him up from the floor you bend your knees (rather than or more than) your back. Lifting weight (w/o bending knees) in this way is an easy way to stress your back muslces and can result in you pulling your back muscles out, which would leave you unable to lift or carry him for several days.

  • I would say your seven month old attached to your hip most of the time is the biggest culprit. If you can get tremendous back pain from carrying an 8 lb baby in your uterus then you sure can get back pain from carrying a 17 lb baby on your hip. Heck my back hurts after carrying my 5 month old daughter for 30 minutes and she weighs about 16 lbs!

My suggestion? Put him down. He'll be fine to play on the floor or in an activity exersaucer. If he cries, it won't hurt him. He has to learn to entertain himself some at some point. Working on your posture will also help. But if you need to have peace of mind, visit your doctor and let him/her know your concerns. I'm pretty sure though that the pain is attributed from carrying your baby constantly.

  • I get that a lot ever since my last pregnancy. Pregnancy can cause strain on your body. Every now and then I go to stand up and get a sharp pain in my back/hip area. I think it's called the sciatic nerve. You could probably benefit from some physical therapy. I would ask your doctor about it.

I know you are not pregnant now but here is some more info..

  • Yes, I actually went to the doctor for it but I didn't realize what it was, I had a dull ache in my lower back/side and it would like radiate down to my knee. I've never had back problems, thought I was to young for that so I didn't think that's what it could be. But the doctor said it was my back and to do stretches every day, it has gotten better but I still feel it sometimes. And it is from the kids, I have two very heavy kids, 3yrs and 1yr. Try to look up stretches for your lower back it really helps.

  • 16 - 17# is alot to be carrying around. Most likely your backpain is from this. Be careful with the lifting especially --- you shouldn't be bending forward and lifting him off the floor - that'll put alot of stress on your back and cause problems. You'll have to learn the right techniques to save your back and prevent further problems - esp. as he grows and gets bigger. Of course you are going to continue holding him and going to continue lifting him - but look up the correct techniques.
google "lifting techniques to save your back" alot of different sites come up (or just "proper lifting techniques"). Go to each site and read up how to proper lift and carry things -- that should help you and prevent further problems hopefully.

  • Which one should i buy?
Is your child as mature as you were at their age?
