i have xbmc-2004-09-01. i have 3 pcs in my network, all pcs dual boot to windows nt 4 (latest service pack) and windows 98. all pcs are networked through a netgear rp614 router and the router is connected to a cable modem. all pcs are in the same workgroup, whether they are booting to nt or 98. all 3 pcs are accessible from each other whether they boot to nt or 98, (i.e. on each pc, all 3 pcs can be seen and accessed from network neighborhood). this is a very stable configuration, i don’t have any browsing/sharing problems with my 3 networked pcs. the xbox is also plugged into the netgear router. i have the set to my routers ip in the xbmc xml file, i.e. 192.168.0.1.
i’ve set up smb in xbmc, just using the workgroup initially. (i have my workgroup defined in the section at the top of the .xml file). from xbmc i can see my workgroup, i can see (and access the shares) on 2 of my pcs in that workgroup but i cannot even see the 3rd pc. there appears to be nothing different about the pc that cannot be seen from xbmc. ofcourse all pcs have different applications on them and may be configured slightly different, but as i said, all 3 pcs can browse each other in network neighborhood. i have not been able to figure out why xbmc can see 2 of my pcs in my workgroup and not the 3rd one. if the pc that xbmc cannot see is the only one turned on then xmbc cannot see the workgroup at all, it returns the error nt_status_object_name_not_found. if either or both of the other 2 pcs are on then the workgroup (and either or both those pcs under it) can be seen and accessed. this appears to be a different problem to any other i have seen documented here or in the xbox scene forums. Risks of not having a firewall:: I had forgotten about the issue with opening a telnet port and having that Windows 3.1 was re-christened Windows For Workgroups - my understanding is http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview/id/590325.htmlHOME |
i have also tried connecting directly to the pc that can’t be seen by using the other smb formats, i.e. user:password and ip address. in these instances i get access denied. it appears there is something about my configuration on that particular pc that the smb implementation in xbmc does not like. Visual Basic: Determining computer name, domain :: It's the domain name and workgroup name that don't work and is of primary importance. I'll try that first link you suggested, which I believe offered code http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=115341HOME | Home computer network setup:: It is preferable not to use spaces in either the workgroup or computer names. .. I believe that this will solve the problem you are having, http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview/id/204276.htmlHOME |
if anyone has any suggestions as to what might be the cause of this rather peculiar problem then i would really appreciate your input. as is always the way, the pc i want connectivity to from the xbox is the one that can’t be seen, the other 2 pcs are crappy pentium 100s that are mainly used for general internet access.
i worked around this problem by reinstalling tcp on the winnt 4 machine that xbmc couldn't see. smb now works like a dream across all 3 of my pcs. :d i have a feeling the problem was something to do with my tcp bindings.
just like to add that imho xbmc is one of the greatest pieces of s/w ever written, i'm having such fun with it.
lenghty description which is nice, but.. i cant seem to find what os the pc you cant access is?
i should have clarified, the pc that can't be seen from xbmc is running winnt 4. this pc dual boots to win98 too. when it is running win98 xbmc can see it and access the shares on it. so definitely looks like some kind of config issue with winnt. the other 2 pcs can be seen and accessed from xbmc when they are running either win98 or winnt. from the networking perspective the 3 winnt configurations are the same, at least i cannot see how they are different. as i said initially all 3 pcs can see and access each others shares via network neighborhood, that's what bafflling me, windows networking likes the setup, smb implementation in xbmc does not like it, or at least one small part of it.
