The Catechism of the Catholic Church states in article 2272: Formal cooperation in an abortion constitutes a grave offense. The church attaches the canonical penalty of excommunication to this crime against human life. Generally agreed-upon examples of formal cooperation might include the individual who had the abortion, and the doctor who performed it. There s debate, however, about whether more indirect roles should be included. For example, last year an auxiliary bishop in Austria caused a stir by suggesting that a businessman who rents space to an abortion clinic is guilty of formal cooperation. More commonly, there s debate about whether politicians who vote not to restrict abortion, or to widen its legality, are guilty of formal cooperation.

  • They do that already..

  • The Catholic Church needs to take a look at their practices of allowing child molestation and other issues. Such as ex-communication period. This is not a Christian practice. God teaches us to forgive.

  • According to your bible all sin is equal so they would have to denie it to every one who sinned. So that would mean that nobody would get communion.

  • They should kick them out of the church! The Church is pure and cannot allow atheistic corruption to soil it!

  • I don't know why people have a fuss over abortion. Killing children is legal even after they are born until they are thirt33n

  • Only if it denies communion to ALL sinners.

  • A politician who supports abortion is in direct cooperation with the abortion. Abortion being allowed without criminal penalties is a policy made by politicians. If that politician supports abortion ,then he or she should withdraw from the church. And if not, be thrown out. If the church has the spiritual guts to do just that.

  • AND IT WOULD BE ABOUT TIME HEY DID!! If you are going to step up to the altar and receive communion, a person needs to embrace all the teachings. Some people treat communion (the body and blood of Christ) as a buffet. They pick and choose the teachings and doctrines they like and scrape their plate of the rest. This is hypocrisy at its worst. Nothing worse than to have two ministries coming off the same altar, the word of God and the actions of hypocrisy.
Through their own actions they are showing people that the altar sounds good when they want God's validation, but that they don't live the very teachings they claim to follow. These spiritual violations need to come to a screeching halt. They should not claim to be Catholic when their actions are reflective of anti-Catholic teachings.

I know Burke, he was right. He is in favor of spiritual integrity. I can not do anything about the man cheating on his wife, but when you openly come out and teach people false beliefs about the Catholic Church (publically endorsing pro-choice issues and letting people think Catholics do not care) is wrong. The Catholic Church should not be forced to accept the secular beliefs at our own altars. You scream about seperating Church and state, Well the state needs to quit corrupting our altars or we should be allowed to have School Prayer again, Prayer at every public function, no companies allowed to be open on the Sabbath or any Holy Day and the list could go on....

  • The only problem, well one of them is, OK, this politician is openly in favor of abortion rights, and is denied communion. But right behind him in line, is a guy who, unknown to Father O'Brien just came back from cheating on his wife on Saturday night. Or down the line from him, a woman is secretly a lesbian. Or another guy actually killed his old girlfriend in a fit of jealousy 10 years ago and got away with it all this time. The priest does not know any of this, unless they confess, and then they can be forgiven. But I can see, if somebody is openly committing a sin, then maybe it should be up to the Priest to say "no". But being raised Catholic I only know about things being a matter of conscience, not the priest determining who got Communion and who did not.

In 2004, the then Archbishop of St. Louis, Missouri, Raymond Burke, got attention when he refused to give Communion to John Kerry when he was here on a campaign stop on a Sunday. He said he would not allow communion to anybody who was openly Pro-choice. Some other Bishops have said the same kind of things, others have said it is a matter of conscience for Catholics.

God bless you mate. may God pour out his spirit upon you and the atheits on here.so you can feel his love in the name of Jesus.

  • As you have stated in your question, getting an abortion or helping someone get an abortion is a grave offense - a mortal sin. People who are in mortal sin should not receive communion because they have placed themselves outside of the Church. Such persons who receive communion are making the matter worse by blaspheming againts God and the Church.

If such people were intellectually and morally honest, they would refrain from communion on their own. Unfortunately, they are not honest, so communion is denied to them.

  • I do not like politicians that say they are associatied with the Catholic Church but neither understand the rules and regulations associated with the natural moral law; that is the basis of Catholic teachings.
I do not like the Nancy Pelosi's of this world trying to bs the world what St Thomas Aquinas said and think because she has this all straight in her own mind the Church will along with it.

I say stop saying your Catholic, if you do not like the rules nobody forces you to be in the Church at all. Those that want to be in the Church (and the numbers still grow each day) know that it is based on solid morality, not cafeteria choices. these teachings are from Jesus Christ and not some guy who didn't like rules.

To answer your question we cannot judge each soul as it comes to receive Holy Communion, only God sees what they have done and if they are truly worthy to receive our Lord and Savior so be it. They could have gone to confession and had their sins absolved(with the understanding they do not do these things again).. But if they go out from Church to vote for immorality and injustice again, they certainly cause scandal.
When they receive unworthily they will have to answer for that in the next world where there is no higher court or media support to cover their wrongdoings.
No its not easy being a politician and a Catholic but it would be a incredible world if they did so.

  • No. If they do, what does that say about them? Think my way or the highway for you? That's insane.

  • No

"Should the Catholic Church deny communion to politicians who vote in favor of abortion?"

please give list of US states where abortion is on the ballot and give initiative numbers.

  • Wasn't this in the media recently? Some priest was yammering about pro-choice politicians being denied communion...the Catholic leaders seem to be permanently mired in the Middle Ages. They just don't seem to understand that most rational people don't give a rats rear end about communion anymore and threats of excommunication are merely pisses in the ocean.

  • But then they'll lose money!!!!!!!

  • Yes....not only that....those people are automatically excommunicated.

    http://www.newadvent.com

  • Yes, absolutely.

You cannot be Catholic and pro-choice. If you are pro-choice then you dissent from Catholic teaching and excommunicate yourself. You enter into mortal sin and should not receive Eucharist. We are charged as Catholics to not receive when we know we are in mortal sin.

Public Catholics who claim a "right" to the Eucharist, not only put themselves in danger, but also lead other astray. By their action and example, they potentially lead others into mortal sin as well.

The Catholic Church, instituted by Christ, has a responsibility to deny the Eucharist to public dissenters. St. Paul says "he who eats and drinks unworthily calls judgment down on himself." This is no small matter. The Catholic Church has been charged by Christ to "feed and guide His sheep" this she must do. If she fails to do this, she fails to be the true Church.

Being Catholic isn't a matter of opinion. If you do not agree with the position of the Church, then you need to stop receiving the Eucharist and pray for enlightenment. It is not a democracy but a theocracy. Christ is the head of the Church.

His Body and Blood should be received with reverence, awe and humility. We should not approach with our own agenda, receiving Him as if we own Him, putting our pride above His will. It is shameful and sinful.

ADDED: The Catholic Church does not teach that all sin is equal. Stealing office supplies is not equal to murdering your child. The Church has never taught that all sin is equal. There are venial sins and mortal sins. Mortal sin is a direct impediment to salvation and must be confessed. Anyone in mortal sin is not to receive the Eucharist. Catholics know this...so dissenting public Catholics are thumbing their nose at Catholic teaching, practice and at Christ himself.
