I want to become a linguist in the Marine Corps. I have heard that it can take a while from about ten months to a year before you would be shipped out.
I will be graduating with my Bachelor's Degree in May 2009. I definitely don't want to leave until then, but should I go ahead and talk to a recruiter so far in advance?
Also, I'm currently trying to lose weight. I've lost 30 lbs. so far, but need to lose 20 more lbs. I'm not completely out of shape (I can run 3 mi in about 23 mins, and one mile in 7:20--I'm a female.) But, should I go ahead and talk to the local recruiter?
Since I won't be able to pass MEPS yet, would I be able to take the ASVAB and DLAB first, and then get MEPS done last, as I should be normal weight by then? Or do I have to pass MEPS before the DLAB? On the other hand, you obviously know what you're interested in- and being able to take your time and do your research will allow you to manage if you are unlucky enough to get a recruiter who tries to pull a fast one on you.
As far as taking tests; As far as I know, MEPS is the last thing you will do before going, and doesn't have to be done during the same trip as any of the other testing/preparation. I know for a fact that you can take the ASVAB at any time if you feel you are ready- though some recruiters seem to prefer that you wait. I'm not sure about the DLAB, though the impression I get from my linguist friends is that it's similarly disconnected from final swearing and signing in time.
linguists in the civilian sector get paid way more than linguists in the military. Soldiers get paid with dirt. Professional linguists have potential to make 50k+ to 6 digits depending on who you work for. Don't rush in too fast.
You can take the ASVAB now.
You have to pass the Physical before you can take the DLAB.
