Most birds will naturally want to be at the highest spot possible - this is their instinct in the wild that keeps them safe from ground dwelling predators.
It can also be a sign of dominance - which is why intelligent large bird owners would tell you to NEVER let a large parrot perch on your shoulder or above your line of sight. It gives them the idea that they are, literally, above you - and can cause behavioral problems in the future like biting and aggressiveness when you try to remove them from their perch.
I've heard many a story about a cockatoo on a shoulder that got frightened or excited and nearly bit off their owner's ear.
Either way - that's a couple of reasons for why they seek out high ground. In terms of walking backward and scratching a lot - there's nothing to be worried about. Perhaps it's something they do in the wild when they're getting minerals from the ground?
Who knows - either way, nothing to be concerned about.
How much does getting a small tattoo on your hip/stomach hurt?
Do anyone else have an itchy anus? ?
