i don't really like the Twilight series anymore cuz mainly they don't really use common sense. i thinki it is just stupid. i read Midnight Sun when i was really crazy about Twilight. Well if he did then people might look at him funny or be suspicious of something. And it might also make Bella move more and then he would just smell her again.
He mentions that he stopped breathing so he wouldn't be tempted by Bella's scent. If he were to fan himself (not blow himself) with a book, it would just make it worse...not better.

**EDIT** I've never seen anyone succeed in fanning themselves in one direction. You're going to get some hint of a backdraft when you bring whatever you're fanning yourself with to starting position. And how retarded would you look fanning yourself in one direction.

Well if you recall he was so angry and was trying so hard to not kill Bella he had his hands balled into fists or holding on to the desk for dear life. Also he wasn't thinking clearly... and when he took a second he realized that if he just stopped breathing then that would take it away so he stopped breathing and didn't smell her anymore but he still remembered what she smelled like and couldn't get it out of his head... or at the back of his throat I think it said!!! Twilight series are amazing!!! If it were that easy it wouldn't have made a good story it would have been... "He smelled and and wanted to kill her but then he fanned himself and he was okay!! How interesting would that be???? Not!!!!
I think it's like when you're sitting next to someone with really stron perfume on, even if you wave a book you will still get some of the scent because you will waft it towards you, the scent won't go entirely so it was probably easier for him to hold his breath. Also if it wasn't very hot in the lab he would draw even more attention to himself by waving stuff around.
