Question to atheists who level the label "hypoctites" at Christians ?

  • If a Buddhist, Hindu, Jew, Muslim, or any other were to not practice what they say they believe, would you believe they were hypocritical as well? In order to be fair, you would have to wouldn't you? If you single out Christians, why?

  • Yes, I would. Of course there are relatively few Buddhists and Hindus in this forum - so far I haven't had the opportunity.

  • Yes, I would- and no, you aren't being singled out.

  • I really wouldn`t dream of levelling the label `hypoctites` at anyone, even if I did know what it means.
    Probably.

  • Duh that what a hypocrite is. I don't single out Christians. It's just happens that a lot of Christians *NOT ALL* are hypocrites.

  • I only call Christians hypocrites. No other religion can be hypocritical, only Christians...

Of course I call out other religions as hypocrites. Look, we are all hypocrites in some way. But when there is a serious group of people who's religion happens to control my laws, money, schools, government, pledges, etc, I spend a little more effort scrutinizing them.

  • Yes, of course I would..
And I try not to single out only Christians, unless there is a reason for it. You guys are not the only people in the world who deserve a fair share of criticism, that's for sure. But I just happen to know much more about the Christian religion than I do about the other ones, and therefore it is much easier for me to realize it when Christians are hypocritical in regards to their beliefs.

Also, Christianity is imposed on today's society way more than most other religions! Thus I attack it more. Some Christians tell me I am dirty and sinful, and that I will burn in hell forever unless I turn to Yahweh and "repent". When was the last time a Buddhist told me such a thing..? NEVER happened!! They mostly keep their religion to themselves, and therefore they usually get more respect from others..

    Just my 2 cents.

  • As an atheist, I do not single out Christians. I am outspoken about other religions too. However, I have grown up in a Christian country, and know Christianity better than the other religions. So, when giving an example of the irrationality of religion, I will use Christianity since it is the religion I am most familiar with.

  • Ermm... Yes. I would say that. I DO say that.

But I live in a country with 83% Christians who have 100% of the power at all levels of government. It's unavoidable that the greatest number and worst examples of hyocrisy would be Christian.

If Christians say publicly that they disapprove of homosexual behaviour because we mean to or not. and when we do we are not to be hypoctites.

Get over yourselves. You are not that special. We are atheistic towards all gods and beliefs - it's just that yours is a bigger pain in the *** because you control the majority where most of us live.

If you like I could give you a link to the Atheist Centre of India, where almost all the debunking and criticism is leveled at Hinduism and folk religions that cause them the problems. They don't say much if anything at all about Xians.

  • My major criticism is not even so much that many Christians don't live by their own standards but that they also then try to force their choices they can't even follow themselves on others who don't share their beliefs at all. That seems to be adding a whole new level to the hypocrisy that I just don't see so much in other groups. Mostly I think Christians should try to follow what they believe for themselves but not push it on others who don't share their beliefs. In this case I am pretty understanding that we as humans can fall short of our aspirations.

  • I don't level it at "Christians" as I would never generalize that way. I level it at people whose actions don't match their words, creeds, or beliefs.

  • Yes. Why wouldn't I....

  • Anyone who preaches one thing and does another is by definition a hypocrite. I am an equal opportunity dismisser of superstition.

  • I am more christian than anything else thanks to geography and cultural background that was chosen for me by fate. (probably)
And I think christians are hypocrites.
We take what suits us and throw back the bits that don't. We never investigate anyone elses religion and are too afraid to countenance the possibility that our understanding is flawed. We believe too much in the carrot and stick approach to faith.

  • Because Christianity is the only religion they hate.

  • I dont think Christians are hypocrites, just smug in their own self righteousness

  • I call anyone a hypocrite who is a hypocrite. It's that simple. I do try to be fair. Do you? I had some exchanges with a Muslim from Iran. He was so stupid and became so hateful and insulting that I blocked him. No one is singling out Christians that I've seen. Christians seem to have an enforced paranoia. They want to be martyrs, so they twist things to make it seem that atheists, Muslims, other denominations of Christians, etc. are picking on them but letting Buddhists, Hindus, etc. get by with the same things. That's only someones paranoid imagination. There are many more Christians than the other religions you list on Yahoo and in the USA too, and many of them try to force their beliefs upon everyone. Look at our money with "In God We Trust" that was first put on all money in 1956. How would you like to see "In Allah We Trust" or "In Brahma We Trust" on all money? I know you would hate that. Well, many people hate to see your deity on our money. Recall the Golden Rule?

  • They don't hate Christians, they hate God -- though they'll NEVER admit it.

  • isnt that the definition of hypocrite? if a hindu said eating beef is taboo and then enjoys a large steak he/she would be a hypocrite. if a jew said everybody should eat kosher and eats ham he/she would be a hypocrite. if a mulsim says drinking alcohol is wrong then goes to the bar and has a shot of whiskey then he/she would be a hypocrite.

christians are the dominant religion here so it is easier to catch the ones that do. also i dont recall the last time someone called this a hindu nation, buddhist nation, jewish nation, or muslim nation.

  • Because they're not as vocal with their beliefs as Christians are, they respect people beliefs as long as they are good people, and they also don't get caught with their pants down.

  • Yes.

(Was this supposed to be a hard question?)

  • Sure, why not?

But it's your feelings of paranoia that make you think you're being singled out -- it's nothing that we're actually doing...

  • I call anyone who says one thing and does another hypocrites, no matter what their religious bent.If you claim to be worried about the state the world is in, yet drive a SUV, or donate to a religious based charity that swaps food or medicines for conversion, I will call you what you are, hypocrite

  • IN the case of Muslim they are hypocritical

They say they are a relgion of peace but we all know that is not true.

OF course they get a bit pissed off if you call them hypocritical.

  • I'm a Catholic, and my room mate is an atheist. Either of us know that anyone of any religion who does not practice what he preaches is a hypocrite. I scold some people who claim to be Christians for gross hypocrisy on here. My friend doesn't single out Christians, and I doubt that other atheists do. I haven't seen one definite case of this, so don't be paranoid, please! There are more Christians on here than Buddhists, Hindus, Jews, Muslims, Jainists, Shintoists, Taoists, Confucianists, Charvakaists, etc., and all too many Christians are ignorant and rude. My friend says she and her boyfriend have had exchanges with Hindus and Muslims, and that they're much nicer than most Christians. I take that as a challenge to try to improve my fellow Christians. Have you seen Pastor Winthrop? I gave this hypocrite a piece of my mind, and one of my contacts said he said bad things about my Catholic church, something like Catholics aren't Christians. He is a sinner for sure to judge a whole religion so harshly. I advise you to work to stop Christian hypocrites you see, e.g. this Pastor Winthrop, instead of trying to deny that there are any. Several true Christians are doing some of that.

  • I've never singled out the Christians. I've met many Jews and Hindus who were very hypocritical. Theists in general do not adhere to their religion.

  • Oh course, but they haven't given me a reason to yet.
