Question re: Photo ID - Domestic
Published by: mike 2009-01-09
Welcome to:hznm.com

  • In a few weeks I will be taking my teen-aged son on a domestic flight. AC's Website indicates that government-issued photo ID is required, such as: passport, driver's licence, etc. The lad has none of that, only an ISIC and college-issued card.

An AC agent explained to me on the phone that a student photo ID card would be acceptable as this is a domestic flight, notwithstanding what it says on the Website. Has anyone any first-hand experience with AC on this matter? Thanks in advance for any assistance.

  • I have seen College ID cards used before and should be considered government issued ID.

Does your son have a provincial ID card used to get into bars and/or purchase alcohol? Alberta has an id card for this purpose.

I have seen some agents reject civic government workers using their photo ID badges. Federal government workers appear to pass muster, however. I guess the real test is at the gate. The agent can accept anything they deem to be valid.

That's exactly what the Y0W gate agent announced this past Sunday.

  • I have a 6 yr old who has been doing alot of flying this year, alot as an UM, and she had been on my passport until a few months ago when she received her own. She had no picture ID, and never had a problem. They were happy with her birth certificate.

As a side note, I was back in Alberta last weekend and had my license renewed. They have a new system where it takes about 2 weeks to get your license now, as they are securely made somewhere down east. So for the 2 weeks you are issued a certificate to carry with no picture. It didn't dawn on me until later that afternoon I now had no picture ID on me, as my passport was at my apartment in Montreal. I had my passport that had expired earlier this year with it's corner cut, and luckily they accepted this! If you live in Alberta you may want to make sure you think about this when getting your new license.

My 12year old son has travelled extensively as an unaccompanied minor on both AC and Westjet using only his birth certificate.

    Its never been an issue.

  • Yep, apparently there's no danger that forged temporary certificates will be in circulation at all - just ask the government of Alberta! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

  • I have only once been asked for gov't issued ID on a domestic flight. I always use my picture ID from my employer.

    Again great inconsistency from AC.

That's assuming that you previously had a DL. If you're new, getting your G1, then you go for two weeks without a photo id.

  • I live in Alberta so I had my passport, also you can request to keep your old DL until your new one arrives if you indicate that you are traveling.

That is true. I just went through the same thing. However, I live in Alberta so I had my passport, also you can request to keep your old DL until your new one arrives if you indicate that you are traveling.

Despite the paper temp DL being easily forged it is my understanding that it likely will not be accepted in most places (i.e. bars and the like). It should not be accepted as ID to board a plane and I am very surprised that the airline accepted it.

The new DL are much more secure and much harder to forge compared to the old ones that were being stolen from registry offices frequently before.

As the temporary ones have only been around for 2-3 months, I suspect there is still uncertainity out there as to its validity as ID. It should only be used to prove you have a valid DL to a cop who can use other information to verify your identity when they are writing up your ticket http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif
