I am new to FT and have been lurking for a while. I would appreciate your usefull thoughts and suggestions on a complicated upgrade I encountered
I booked a flight YYZ-FRA-CPT for Friday mid April through Expedia and was sent a paper ticket issued by LH shawing all flights as LH flights as codeshared.
I was interested how to upgrade the YYZ-FRA portion of the flight, which is operated by AC, and I have Elite status and both SWU and SSWU. I called AC and was told that as the flight is LH I cannot do any upgrades until at the gate :( . Is that really so? Waiting at the gate on a Friday YYZ-FRA is not going to do anyhthing, is it?
Also she said that she would not know what the class booked W with LH is equivalent to in AC, so I do not know which upgrade certificate to use - SWU or SSWU. Does anyone know what W class in LH corresponds to in AC?
The portion FRA-CPT is on LH metal, so I believe I have no chance of upgrading it, as I have no status with LH. Is that so?

How many numbers do your FRA-CPT-FRA flights have? If these are four-digit flight numbers, they are codeshares operated by SAA, and will not earn Aeroplan miles.
FRA-CPT is 576, I think it is LH, return is from Johannesburg %&#, again I think LH,
both are V codes, does anybody know whether V codes are upgradable and how much AC aeroplan they earn. Or is it better to put them on Miles and More LH?

You can't access operational upgrades, you just get them (although some flyers try to "bribe" gate agents with chocolates :cool: ).
Operational upgrades most often happen when the econo cabin is full and they are looking for ways of accommodating passengers on the oversold flight. The best way is to move up frequent flyers to the front cabin (at least we think that is a good idea!). Your status and demeanour have a lot to do with whether you will get that upgrade or not. If LH Senator or on a higher fare, those passengers are ahead of Star Gold but Star Golds occasionally get the prize (ie operational upgrade).
Sometimes, the gate agents are VERY busy trying to accommodate everyone and will operational upgrade passengers with NO status. So it sometimes helps to ask very nicely (and only once and don't hover around the gate desk) if there is "any chance of getting an upgrade on this flight" if you know the flight is full.

Drumbo yours sounds like my scenario, I was on a BD codeshare W fare which is equivalent to AC L fare. The equipment was AC. WHomever you talk to make sure you get names down and have them put a note in your resev file. I think it is CIC 471 that states that one can u/g using an SSWU when flying a star alliance codeshare with AC metal.

LH actually op ups Senators, the FTL before going to Star Golds. This has worked in benefit before :)
