I recently received a AR-15 as a gift, the only thing I don't like about it is the carry handle,I really wish it was a flat top.I am thinking about getting a Eotech for it but I think it mite be up too high.I am wondering if anyone here has a AR with a carry handle and put optics on it.If so can you tell me what you thought of it.
I don't have a carry handle on my RRA carbine. But to mount my Eotech I used the RRA Dominator mount.
It's made for the Eotech and gives a nice lower 1/3'd co witness.
From what I've seen you want to have the optic as close to the bore as you can for best results. I think it'll sit too high up on the carry handle.

I had an eotech on a carry handle and didn't like it. I put a regular 4x optic on the carry handle and kept it there. I've also tried Aimpoints on the carry handle and didn;t like them up there either.
For my own preference, I just prefer using the iron sights on the carry handle, or using the fixed 4 power optic on an arms quick release carry handle mount.

Let me tell you, that's a hell of a gift! Realistically it really is personal preference, I personally would not like optics on a carry handle as it would be too high for me. I would recommend changing out the upper to an A-3 Flattop. It would only cost you about $100 for a stripped upper as you have all of the other parts. If you got the rifle for free then it may be worth it for you. I have an A-3 Flattop and love that I can remove my carry handle and put anything on the picatinny rails. It is a very straightforward operation, the only thing that you would need is a DPMS tool (about $30) to remove the barrel etc. I hope this helps.
