3. To know if your friend is online there will be a blue dot next to their name and when they are offline there is a red dot with a and "x" inside..
1) Text - yes Voice - No
2) There are "chat rooms" in certain games (Madden, etc) but you have the chat option for a specific friend or groups through your XMB - enter their ID and it invites them to a voice chat session. When HOME comes next month out it will be the way to connect to people outside of the game, which right now is lacking.
3) on the far right of your xmb under friends it says their name, what game they're playing and if they're not online, it tells you how long since they've last signed in.

3) In the right top corner of the sreen, it says if your friend is either online or offline.
1) You can send text messages but not voice messages. I heard there coming with that soon (rumour)
2) Yeah, you can creat a chat room right from the XMB.
3) At the top right cornor of the screen it will say if a person just got online. Or, you can go to the friends section on the XMB and it will show all who is online or offline. It will also show you when was the last time they got online.
