  • What is it like? How do they insert it-needle, gas mask? If a needle, where do they inject it? What happens? What is your personal experience- and what is general anesthesia like?

    Thanks and God Bless,
    Christine

  • If you have a serious issue with needles they could probably give you a gas mask. Otherwise unless you're a little kid they give you a needle. The needle goes in the top of your hand where the vain is. Even if you do get a gas mask they still give you a needle once your asleep.

I've only ever had gas mask because I hate needles. Pretty much, they put the mask on you, tell you to relax and take deep breaths. The stuff you're breathing in smells kinda funny. Then before you know it you're out.

Anesthesia doesn't agree with my stomach and every time I have it I can't eat until it's completely out of my system or I vomit. But that's just me.

  • Hi Christine,
A pre-surgical anesthesia is normally administered into your I.V. line. Since they start an I.V. on you before you go in to surgery for the saline solution, any blood products they may need to use, your anesthesia, medications, etc., they give you a shot before they take you back to the surgical room to make you relax. I very rarely remember getting to the operating room after having that shot! When it is first administered I felt a little light headed, I remember joking with the nurses about "the insurance company paying for happy hour today!" and then we started down the hallway but that is all.

My experience with general anesthesia has been that when I wake up I am really groggy, have a hard time focusing, a little nauseous, and sleep like the dead for a few hours after. Sometimes I get gassy, bloated and really super thirsty after it too. Everyone reacts differently to it though so I am sure you could get fifty different reactions from 50 different people. As long as you don't end up allergic to it they you should do fine. I think they should give you some of that pre surgical anesthesia AFTER you wake up too - you sure would be a lot happier about the whole thing! Good luck if you have to have surgery and talk to your anesthesiologist before you get any medications - he/she will be more than happy to answer any questions for you. A word of (tongue in cheek) advice: Don't make your anesthesiologist angry!
