Philosophy is the quest for ultimate knowledge; to answer the foundational questions about the universe in which we live and by extension, our own existence: origins, purpose and final end. To find the explanation that will answer all subsequent questions. If we contend that knowledge=power, then it is also the quest for ultimate power.
Since it is quite likely that such an explanation cannot exist, we have to content ourselves with a few fragments. The most fruitful branch of philosophy is the philosophy of natural science, the area in which most living philosophers are currently working, usually without realizing such that they are. It has been so successful, in fact, that it is no longer even considered a part of philosophy.
Other branches of philosophy include metaphysics, ontology, ethics, epistemology and logic. But if all you're looking for are dry classifications and definitions you can always check the Wikipedia article.
Philosophy is a method – it is something we do. It is the critical interpretation, analysis and evaluation of ideas.
It is the rigorous, systematic and reflective enquiry into...
...What is the nature of reality [metaphysics]
...What types of things exist [ontology]
...What can be known [epistemology]
...How to construct and make sense of arguments [logic]
...How to live properly [ethics]
...What is beautiful [aesthetics]

The word defines itself: phil = love and sophy = wisdom, so it is a love of wisdom.
There are many types of philosophy. In the West we think of Plato and Socrates, but India has a rich tradition of philosophy and so does China.
Philosophy asks very deep questions that are hard to answer, such as, What is the nature of personal identity? What is Nature? What is ethical? Why not pursue a life of pleasure? Do we have pre-determined moral duties? Are all people equal, and if so, how?
if it is physically impossible for matter to exist, as the first rule of existence(nothing doesnt exist), is everything not in existence?
Why do people live in sorrow, why do they have to live in fear?
So what is going to happen?
