Who do I contact, and at what address, to request permission to reprint a nude photo of Marilyn Monroe that was published in the first issue of Playboy magazine in 1953? I want to reprint the photo in a book that I am writing.

  • Yes, a mailing address that includes a street address, a company address, and a department within that company would answer the question, even if there is not a specific person's name as part of the address. Thanks.

  • I have not found a specific name, but I have found a specific department, address, and fax number relating to requests for permission to reprint images. The address is provided with respect to images from the Playboy web site, but I presume that it relates to images from the magazine as well. Instead of a name, there is a line in the address "Attention: ---", which would direct it to the right department. Would this information be a sufficient answer?

  • Isn't it so that expires in 50 years? in this case all you have to do is wait a few weeks.

  • No, I have not contacted Playboy magazine. I am concerned (as with my question regarding Cosmopolitan magazine) that the Playboy magazine organization is so large and complex that a general letter will not reach the specific person on the staff who is involved in granting permission to reprint a photograph that was originally published in the magazine 50 years ago. I am hoping that someone will be able to provide me with a specific name and address to contact within the Playboy magazine staff.
  • Flickr Hacks | OReilly Media::
permission (and possibly pay a fee), you cant be sure the hed need to pay you for your photo if you he were compiling a book he intended to sell.

  • Have you already tried contacting Playboy to see if it is the proper place to obtain permission? As noted with your other question, I'm sure that one of us would be happy to research this possibility, if you have not yet contacted the publisher.
  • The Starlite Cafes Publishers Pen::

  • The answer has provided me with an address and a department for me to write to, so I am hopeful that I've been directed to the right resource.

  • Here is a story about the pictures, together with intellectual property rights, being put up for sale by the son of the photographer: http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_670676.html?menu= If a sale has gone through, you might also have to contact the new owner.

  • Hello alice4215, The page cited below contains the address and fax number for the Rights and Permissions Department of Playboy Enterprises International, Inc. As I mentioned previously, this address is provided with respect to images from the Playboy web site. However, I presume that the Rights and Permissions Department is responsible for rights and permissions for images from the magazine as well. (It is likely the Marilyn Monroe photo you seek has been reprinted on the Playboy web site at some point, which would further make this the correct department to contact.) "Playboy.com Legal Notices - Requesting Reproduction Permissions" Playboy.com http://www.playboy.com/help/legal_notices.html#permission - justaskscott Search strategy: Browsed Playboy.com -- not for the pictures, of course, but for the legal notices.
