  • The PDL, as I'm sure most of you know, is the American fourth division, an amateur developmental division. It also happens to contain the largest sample size we've got - 909349 minutes this year, compared to about 300000 for MLS, and 463,000 for the A-League. Unfortunately, it's beset by shoddy, inconsistent stat-tracking, and the fact that pretty much nobody has seen any of the games. Because of a compulsion or something, however, I'm interested in its statistics, so I figured it deserved a thread.

  • To be fair, though, the PDL isn't exactly teeming with geriatrics. Last year, there were only 20 players over 35, who combined only played 1.2% of all PDL minutes. There were an additional 48 between 30 and 35, who played 2.7% of the minutes. I think mutinywxgirl is right, those kinds of players are generally more player/coaches who either can't resist playing a few minutes or are filling in for a depleted roster.

  • Actually, that doesn't surprise me - especially around here. There are so many talented players who can add so much stability to the younger kids on these PDL teams. I think teams in any metropolitan area would have one or two players like that.

BTW Kenn - LOVE the avatar! Boy does that bring back memories! :D

  • Ages first...this year, I've got ages (hopefully mostly accurate) that account for 97.2% of the minutes played in the league. Despite the league being, nominally, a developmental league, this year the average age (per minute) was 22.7 (as of 7/15), probably a bit above the average age of a graduating college senior. The median age (per minute) was a good deal lower, 21.9, but still high for a developmental league.

This year, the league saw 2.40% of (accounted-for) minutes played by players below 18, up slightly from 1.95% last year. Goals scored were down, however, from 2.71% in 2003 to 2.31 this year. It's always sort of suspect picking an arbitrary cutoff like 18 years, though - Brett Hite (Spokane Shadow), 18.4 years and a freshman at U Washington this year, was exceptional, scoring 14 goals and 6 assists. Anthony Grillo (Nevada Wonders), 18.0, Cal Poly freshman, also added 6 more goals. Neither has had much of an impact on their college programs yet, though.

  • Holy cow. I didn't realize there were guys that old in the PDL.

  • Good stuff, Chris.

It's helpful to know how many of the guys in the PDL are of college age (18-22) and who the old guys are, I figure. Who's the oldest guy in the league, just wondering?

I'd agree, but there's plenty of guys who are older than 22 and in college, particularly foreigners. I'm trying to track where everybody went to college, but tracking their year of graduation is just too much work.

    Top 5:

    Club Min Age
    Ledesma, Carlos Brooklyn 270 40.5
    Eddinger, Zachariah Reading 245 40.5
Parnham, Lee West Michigan 547 40.1

Bishop, Ian New Orleans 1252 39.1

  • More ages:

This is a team/by team breakdown of average age and per game goal differential:

There is no significant correlation between winning and team age. However, the youngest teams fall into two categories, they are either 1. renowned MLS player factories (Cape Cod, Boulder, Chicago, and by the looks of it Carolina), and a large group of mediocre or worse clubs. Orlando and Carolina, in their first years in the PDL, both look to be on their way to providing excellent training environments for college players. Everybody else, not necessarily so much.

Of the five teams descending from higher divisions this year, only one, Carolina, seemed to embrace the developmental mentality. The other four, Reading, El Paso, Indiana Blast, New Jersey, all had an average age well above 23. True expansion teams, meanwhile, were more split, with Orlando, Cleveland, and Colorado Springs below or very close to 22.7 years, and DFW, Lafayette, and Laredo well above it.

  • Of course, most players in the PDL are never going to make it past the PDL (or college), so maybe team statistics aren't that interesting. Below is a list of the top 20 scorers (goals+assists)/90 minutes from this year, with a minimum of 400 minutes played.

Of the college-aged players, Storey is a key player for UNC, Nowaf Jaman is scoring at a great rate for Western Illinois, Ibisevic is currently with Paris St. Germain, Rowland is undefeated University of New Mexico's leading scorer, Julian Nash is the leading scorer on a solid Creighton team, Knox Cameron is injured (but a great prospect).

Dan Broxup has 4 goals for a crummy Evansville team, Thabiso Khumalo is lighting things up for Coastal Carolina, Mira Mupier hasn't done much for UNC-Charlotte, Brett Hite the same for U Wash, Wasson has been ok for Tulsa, Salazar a little disappointing for Portland, Sefton Kincaid hasn't played for Holy Cross (!).

Not really sure how to interpret this - apparently, PDL success isn't that indicative of college performance. I don't want to say it's because college is all that superior (although there's no Chicago Fire Reserves in college soccer), or because there's significantly greater variance in team ability. So, I don't really have any conclusions to draw from this.
