    does anyone have a papillon dog...i recently adopted one and would like to know what are their charecteristics and behaviour....i read some sites but i would like to hear first hand from people that have or had one.

    thank you

  • I have a Papillon, they are lively dogs who will happily play all day, they are easy to train however they are sensitive and respond best to positive reward based training, my pap loves everybody and other dogs and cats, she is happy to walk as far as you want to go, and enjoys meeting people and dogs, in the house she likes to be near to me and the other dogs and enjoys playing with her toys, she is obedient and loyal, she has extremely good hearing and will let us know if people are around, do not give any attention for barking though because if you do they may become yappy. They are very intelligent. I think they make great pets and some are used as hearing dogs for deaf people.
  • RespBreeding::
    Obedience & Therapy Dogs that time hardly anyone knew what a Papillon was and the PCA owners, should compliment our dogs in our attire and manner.

  • Aside from being affectionate with family, they're easy to train and very playful too! They have a big-dog attitude and a level of alertness that make them super watchdogs, but when it comes to protecting...it's important to make sure they don't bite off more than they can chew...

    I've learned about them from this topic which is very helpful in dealing with them. Please click on:

  • I have 2, the older of which is now 6. They're great dogs, but they're a lot of work. For one thing, they need to be with people as much as possible. Being alone makes them nervous and anxious, and they're very prone to separation anxiety behaviors. They also have a LOT of energy and enjoy long walks and off-leash parks to run and play. They can be difficult to housebreak, but they are very intelligent, so if you stick with a program they can learn anything. They do chase small animals, so be careful allowing them off-leash in open areas. Some can be very shy around new people and animals, so don't force too much interaction on your dog right away, it may frighten her. Also, I'll warn you- they are way to sneaky for their own good. DO NOT leave anything edible, valuable, or toxic below 3 feet above the ground for any reason. My dogs can open doors, open cabinets, open drawers, and undo clasps/zippers to get at what they want. I have a wooden dog staircase that opens by the stair tops lifting off for storage space, and it didn't take them long to flip the tops off and get inside. They are very very smart and get into a lot of trouble that way (my puppy opened my purse when he was 3 months old, dug out a pack of chewing gum, and ate it, resulting in a very expensive hospital stay). Also, stay away from any kind of dog or cat dogs that contain smaller objects, tiny balls, or bells contained inside a bigger object (like plastic cat balls with bells or tiny mice inside). It'll take about 5 minutes for them to figure out how to get the objects out and potentially swallow them.

    Overall, Paps are great dogs, but they definitely keep you on your toes. If you have any questions, feel free to email me, I'm always happy to help out fellow Pap owners.

    Edit: They are not typically aggressive to other dogs, I take my 2 to work with me (grooming salon), dog parks, downtown to walk around, over to friends' houses with dogs, etc. They both do fine. One is shy and will usually stay by me, but he doesn't fight. The other is very outgoing and loves to play with everyone.
