    i just bought this router plus 250 gig ext drive by maxtor.

    i have it all set up and configured in windows 2000 but can't access from xbox!

    i even called tech support on the the router ( so sad..) that was a mistake!

    here is what i have going...

    computer name :server
    computer workgroup:l7media

    router host name :wgt634u
    router domain(workgroup?): na

    usb disk on router *host name: rizzles
    usb workgroup on router: l7media *

    media center xml line is as follows:

    *
    * l7media
    * -

    now i used this exact setup with my computer set up as rizzles and its workgroup as l7media and it worked just fine....?
    the response i keep getting now from the usb drive config. is "wrong computer name"

    any ideas??? i'm going crazy *@#%!

    thanks in advance!

  • hmm.. well i assume the router is then sharing the drives "as is"?

    i don't know the specifics of the router, but when you click the share defined by

    smb://192.168.1.1/

    you get a list of drives such as c etc?

    if you get this, you should be able to specify the share/bookmark as

    smb://192.168.1.1/c/directorywithmovies

    and another as

    smb://192.168.1.1/c/anotherdirectorywithmovies

  • actually when the usb drive is installed on the router it sets up the drive as /share/partion1/xxxx . *xxxx being what ever you have on the drive. *it does not show a drive letter.

    oddly enough when viewed from an entire network point of view it shows up as the proper workgroup and computer name! you jaust can't get to it that way with the smb...???

  • well i've tried as you have suggested. ihave the two modified lines below.

    <!-- my pictures shares !-->
    *
    *
    * * *network
    * * * <!-- you can use the following formats: !-->
    * * * <!-- smb://domain;user:password@ip/share/directory/ !-->
    * * * <!-- smb://user:password@ip/share/ !-->
    * * * <!-- if guest/public access is enabled: !-->
    * * * <!-- smb://ip/ !-->
    * * *smb://xbox:xbox@192.168.1.1/pictures/
    * *

    *

    and

    * * *network
    * * * <!-- you can use the following formats: !-->
    * * * <!-- smb://domain;user:password@ip/share/directory/ !-->
    * * * <!-- smb://user:password@ip/share/ !-->
    * * * <!-- if guest/public access is enabled: !-->
    * * * <!-- smb://ip/ !-->
    * * *smb://l7media;xbox:xbox@192.168.1.1/movies/
    * *

    both returned the same invalid computer name...???

    i'm up against the ropes but not down!

    any suggestions?

  • just a follow up....

    i worked perfectly as advertised just using the ip and directory name! it would help if i could spell !!!! :blush:

    as a note the router itself puts the directory structure /share/partition1/ in front of the drive you place on the router no mater what...

    this is a great little device! :nuts:

  • i just went thru my xbmc log i found this...
    15-09-2004 01:05:39 smbdirectory->getdirectory: unable to open directory : 'smb://l7media;xbox:xbox@rizzles/pictures/'
    unix_err:'13' nt_err : 'c0000122' error : 'invalid computer name'

    also i'm using ntfs on the usb drive.

    any help with this info??

  • got it to work!!!!!

    i used this

    smb://192.168.1.1/

    duh! well the only problem is that i can not differntiate my menu by movies, pics, and music. i only get the whole drive then its subfolders. is there a way to get it to see the specific folder not just the drive???

    at least it works...

    thanks for all the advice so far!

  • as a first step, modify the line

    smb://l7media;xbox:xbox@rizzles/pictures/

    remove the domain l7media and enter the ip for rizzles instead, i.e:

    smb://xbox:xbox@x.x.x.x/pictures/

    also, if this doesn't work, try with the domain name, but with the ip for rizzles still:

    smb://l7media;xbox:xbox@x.x.x.x/pictures/

  • thanks ...i'll give that a try and let you know..
