My puppy poops in her crate at night, how do I get her to stop?

Welcome to:hznm.com

  • I just got a 7 week old puppy friday night and she has been pooping in her kennel at night and we get up with her every couple of hours and she still poops in there. What can I do to get her to stop going in her bed?

  • Don't feed her about 4 hours before she goes to bet and she should be fine.

  • The crate may be too big. You need to divide it up with a crate divider or wood slats. She should only have enough room to turn around. Try making the last meal earlier in the evening. If you got her at a pet store, that could be part of the problem. Those pups are used to only going in their crate and it can be hard to break. Take her out often and make sure you stay outside long enough with her until she goes before putting her in her crate. Make sure you do not have any towels or rugs in there with her. With consistency and patience, she will learn where to go in a short time.

  • Put her on a feeding schedule. Try to feed her before or after you put her in or take her out. If you feed her before you put her in the crate, wait at least 15 min before taking her to potty, she will poopie/pee outside and then hopefully get used to going to go potty first before you put her in. If you let her eat in her cage then she will poop in there, because she can't hold it like big dogs do, her belly stays full. I use a schedule with all my dogs and it works great, then I know when they need to use the bathroom. Its like clock work around here, and this avoids any messy problems. Good Luck, with practice she will get it.

  • It's great of you to get up with her at night! You are doing good so far! Yes, don't feed her within a couple of hours of bed time. Also, check the crate, make sure it is not too big for her, She should have enough room to stand and turn around but that's it (at least until she is trained not to go in the crate). This helps in the same way that putting a toddler in regular underwear helps them potty train- they don't want to go on themselves or close to their own skin. It may sound a little mean at first but you ARE taking her out often to stretch.

and PS: The Humane Society of America suggests feeding your dog in the crate so that they associate the crate with GOOD things!

  • Try feeding her in her crate for a week or so. Dogs don't like eating and toileting in the same place, so she should soon stop. Good Luck!

  • the puppy needs to be on a feeding schedule, twice a day is fine and take the puppy out to poop about 20 minutes after eating. on a day when you are home with your puppy, watch it and when it wants to poop in the wrong place yell no and snatch it up off the floor, this will surprise the puppy and stop the poop temporarily, pet it as you take it outside, to an area you want it to poop in i.e. grass or sand.
If you have it pooping on a newspaper area in the house and you line the cage with paper, the puppy associates the feel of paper underfoot with the toilet. After the puppy poops outside, praise it and love it up.
this will take a few weeks, but if you stick with the schedule, no food before dinner, only feed based on the manufacturer recommendations, and do not provide food/water overnight, you should be fine. the puppy will not starve or die of thirst overnight.
Also, do not use pure bleach when cleaning the crate, make sure you dilute it well.
    good luck

  • Its a puppy!!! How long are you leaving her outside to do her business? Sometimes it will take a while, but when she does go, praise her and tell her what a good girl she is. She will get the idea and get praised for it. Don't feed her after her evening meal. Eating will stimulate her to go and she should be ready to do her business 15 to 20 minutes after she eats. Stay outside until she goes. If you are getting up every couple of hours to take her out, she will never get housebroken, because she will get used to going out in the middle of the night.

  • Puppies have to go to the bathroom a lot. At 7 weeks she's having to go every couple of hours or so. Use bleach or something similar to clean the kennel up and make sure your bringing her out ever couple of hours....even at night. Puppies and infants have a lot in common, they eat poop and sleep....that's all. Be patient, she can't hold it yet.

  • I'm afraid you are going to have these issues, first of all she is too young to have been adopted, second of all dogs have NO spincter control until they are 3 months of age. Do not feed past 5 pm and pick up the water around 7 pm, make sure she gets out multiple times before bedtime and once again during the night. She should not be put to bed with a Full Tank. If she's pooping in the crate then she's not doing her business outside when you take her at night, if she doesn't go poop before bed and when you take her outside in the night then you're not giving her time to do so or she doesn't understand yet what outside is for. Make sure the area she sleeps in is tiny, she should only have enough room to stand up and turn around and lie down that's it. If it's too big she'll poop in one area and lie in another.

When she does go outside are you praising her and rewarding her with a treat? are you ignoring accidents when she has them in the house?

You must give this puppy time and be patient, accidents will happen for up to 1 year. It's your responsibility to train her in a way she understands. My suggestion is that all these questions and a lot more can be found in a book at your local book store. I've attached a link for a book that will help you for the first year.

  • recently got a puppy too...
but after you have fed her put her straight outside (or where ever you want her to go) and wait until she has done it, it may take veeerrryyy long, like with my puppy but you just need a lot of patience.
Keep repeting this process of waiting until she does a poop, and also add a command to it when she poos outside: wee wees, go poop etc and PRAISE HER so much when she does it where she is supposed to. then she will see pooing outside a good thing.

this is how i did it with my puppy now he is more or less house trained in only 2/3 months.

  • Her crate may be too big. If the crate is too big, they will make an area in the crate for a bathroom.

The crate should be big enough for her to stand and turn around, but not so big that you can fit 3 or 4 dogs in it.

  • Feed you pup around 5 o'clock at the latest, pop her out side every 15mins after to get her to do a poo. She may need a couple of poos at night.

It seem very young to have a pup she shouldn't be leaving her mum till after 8 weeks. Shes still very young so is bound to have mishaps, eventually she get the idea that outside is for doing the business just make sure you pop her out side quite often.

  • Well, she's a brand new baby, too young to even be away from Mom yet, so she can't really control that stuff. Puppies need to go out every few hours. You just kind of have to go with a weird sleep schedule for a few weeks, sorry.

But I would try not feeding her so late...try giving her dinner around 3 hours before she goes down for the night but NO later than that. It may help.

  • Feed the puppy when you are there, do that in the crate, then take it outside just a few minutes later. It will likely poop then. Do that again if you have time about 30 minutes later. Don't feed the puppy just before bedtime. Put a chew toy, like a rawhide thing in there to satisfy the chewing. The puppy will not starve, I assure you. Puppies, just like infants, have no control over their body functions. The muscles are not strong enough yet to hold it in. You have to let them go when they need to. They do make doggie diapers, but that would be a real mess on your puppy's back side, so I don't recommend it. Put wee wee pads (available at all pet stores) in the bottom of the kennel so it's a little easier to clean up. You have to be patient, the pup is not stupid, it's just not old enough to have the ability to hold it.

  • First off try taking her outside literally a few min before you put her in her cage. Give her a meal time schedule, don't let her eat anything after a certain time that way when she goes to bed she doesn't have anything waiting to come out. when you let her out in the morning give her a treat if her cage is clean and if its not make it known to her (eventually she will understand). If nothing from the above works it could be that she is nervous in her cage and you should figure out a new arrangement for bedtime. But to make clean up a little easier in the mean time use puppy pads or news paper so she realizes its ok to go on those surfaces and outside but not her cage floor or any other part of the house. Hope it helps : )

  • Her crate is probably too big for her size right now. When they are puppies they need a smaller crate, and make it "her own" with a special blanket and stuffed toy that she likes. She should not have anything to eat 2-4 hours before bed, depending on her breed, with minimal water intake. Make sure you take her out every 2 or so hours to do her business, and try to always use the same words when she does, like going potty, or pee, or doing her business...that when when she is a bit older, she will already be associating those words with what she is suppose to be doing outside, and always reward with love and praise when she does do her business outside. Be patient with her also, puppies have a very short attention span, and pushing them too hard will make it worse in the long run and then they will sometimes potty in the house/Create just to disobey you. they are just like children.

  • Don't feed her past 7pm. Most dogs won't poo where they sleep. If they do, this is a hard thing to break.

  • ^^^^
NEVER feed a dog in the crate

you shouldn't feed her before bed. Stop feeding her about 2 hours before bed and then take her out right at bed time and every 2 hours throughout the night. If her system's empty, she shouldn't need to go.
