| | Humane Society of Greater Miami Clinic:: How Do I Trim My Cat's Claws? Vocal Cats Aggression Between Cats .. What Not To Do • You should never attempt to handle a fearful or aggressive cat. http://www.humanesocietymiami.org/pph cat issues.htmHOME | I have a golden retriever and 2 five month old cats. My golden retriever is a sweet and gentle dog and does not intentionally try to hurt anybody, and is gentle with my cats, but sometimes she gets really playful and jumpy around them. She runs around in circles, barks, pounces right near them, chases them (only a bit) and snaps the air around them.
She is not trying to be agressive, but I am afraid that this type of play around them is NOT acceptable and may lead to worse behavior. Also, it makes my cats scared of my dog when we are trying to make their relationship better.
So the main problem is that my mom actually encourages this behavior! She claps her hands and gets all excited and praises my dog when she is doing this because she thinks its cute for her to play with them. My thought is that dogs shouldnt play with cats because this can lead to worse problems and can be dangerous.
Also i told my mom, what if she accidentily bites the cats? My mom said, "oh, she has ....
Tell her to stop or the dog WILL kill the cat
he will thinks its OK and nature will not allow the dogs instincts to not kill the cat
Can you call your veterinarian and tell him or her what's going on and ask him to talk to your mom? Maybe hearing from an authority would get her to understand.
Tell your mom that your LARGE breed dog can cause MAJOR traumatic injury to your SMALL cats during this rough play. If your dog were to stomp ON your cat instead of beside it, it could break your cats back. A misplaced bite by your dog, could puncture a lung! If the cats are too afraid to travel across the house to the litterbox, now you have house soiling problems! If it's your dog and cats, you need to put your foot down! If you still live with your parents, you need to do some SERIOUS talking! You aer totaly right! Unfortunately, mom's usually think they know more than their children so get anything you can to back yourself up. Books, vet advice, even this website. Not only must she stop this behavior now, but she and you need to start immediately retraining this dog proper behavior around the cats. Remember all domestic animals started out as wild and their hunting instincts are ingrained.
You are right, your mom is wrong, print out these posts and show them to her. You are absolutely right that the dog could accidentally hurt the cats, golden retrievers don't realize how big they are. I have seen with my own eyes a jack russell puppy die because he was playing with a golden retriever in a similar manner, the golden accidentally stepped on the puppy and crushed its liver. And yes it does stress the cats out to no end, and will probably make the cats afraid of the dog. It's like letting a gorilla play with a toddler.
No... your Mom is definitely NOT doing the right thing!!
Now...what happens if she is walking the dog and two small children run by the dog? Will the dog, used to chasing the cats and being REWARDED when she chases the cats (by your Mom's encouragment) -- will the dog then chase these little kids?
Your Mom is not doing the right thing! Those cats need PEACE and the Golden, which is usually a PEACEFUL breed, is being taught THE WRONG TRICKS.
I don't know what you can do-- or how old you are -- but maybe you should talk to someone who you KNOW is SYMPATHETIC and on YOUR side, and who can talk to your Mom without getting you OR the cats in trouble! Then again, can you keep the cats in YOUR room??? That's the lesser of two evils, so to speak.
Wishing you AND your kitties the best of luck!!!!!
Tell her to stop!!!
everyone above has great points i think you should take the suggestions of everyone above they are all right and PERSISTENCE PERSISTENCE PERSISTENCE!! works every time
also tell you mom how this is making you feel and its traumatic to you and you are constantly worried good luck
I have the same problem! We have a MASSIVE dog that is incredibly sweet, but when she starts playing with the Cat she becomes really aggressive as well..Biting and snapping next to the cats face, and when the cat runs by, the dog opens her mouth and is INCHES from biting her face off!! I'm quite worried myself....I let them play all the time but always keep a close eye on them...As soon as I see the Dog becoming aggressive I tell the dog NO!! And separate them for awhile.... What do you think about this breeders contract? - American Pit :: You should purchase a nice, playful, stocky ( by stocky I mean well fed, My dogs are not in kennels. I'm sorry that your Mum condones this behaviour! I have to say that when I'm not at home I leave my cat in my room...I know the dog will end up killing her one day if I don't....
Your dog is similar to mine...If you are there telling her NO! she generally leaves the cat alone...It's when they are by themselves and there is no one to control them....You need to put your cat in a private place when you aren't there...She will hate it but you are protecting her!!
I assure you the Dog will go over board with the cat one day...Some Dogs are OK and these things don't bother them...But If your Dog is anything like mine she can't control herself sometimes and she will hurt the cat..Even if she doesn't mean it...Whether it be her sticking her paw out and trying to grab the cat..Or just trying to Nip her face to "Play" back with her...It will happen! Be careful please!!
EDIT: To the guy who said the dog will attack children and Other outside things that is NOT from him "playing" with the cat inside! My Dog plays REALLY different with my cat then when she sees a stray cat outside...My Dog KNOWS the difference between family and BAD STRANGER!!! My Dog would NEVER attack anyone or anything OUTSIDE of the house without first one of her family members telling her to..
The situation here we are discussing is how to MAKE SURE THE DOG PLAYS nicely with the owners CAT INSIDE the house! Dogs aren't that stupid as to just attack anything..I'm sorry if you had Dogs like this, but you obviously did not raise them properly...We are talking about PLAYING not ATTACKING!!!
well, how old are you? that might be partbof the problem. just be like "mom, you're gonna kill the cats!" and then run to your room and start crying.make a scene. ALWAYS works XDDD
but tell your mom sternly that this will most likely lead to worse behavior[as you have.] be persistent. bug, and bug, and BUG till she gives in.
Does the mom dog will go find her pups if will get separated?
How do I convince my mom to get us a dog?
