Welcome to:hznm.com

  • Just out of the blue he will bark and nip at my arms and clothes, even tore one of my tops,he also bit my brother who visits. I feel like my trust has gone in him now and dont know what to do.Any advice welcome???

  • First have your vet examine this guy and rule out any medical reasons for the unpredictable behavior.Hypothyroid and tumors can cause aggression issues. Consult a behaviorist if there is no medical reason for this behavior.

  • contact or go visit with your breeder IMMEDIATELY.. ( if you have a BYB or puppymill dog.. this may be a genetic thing... temperament is genetic!!!

is this dog neutered? he is reaching sexual maturity at this age.

do you take obedience classes and how much exercise do you give the dog.

  • First, are you certain this is not just him being a puppy? Dogs who do things like that out of the blue usually have medical problems, and it's rare. It may seem out of the blue to you, but it may not be. Puppies tend to be rude. They jump, nip, bite, etc. They just need training. I have not met your dog, I do not understand why he is doing this or what exactly he is doing. The best thing to do is contact a dog behaviorist. If this is aggression, this needs to be dealt with as soon as possible.

  • Your dog growls & snaps as it was challenging you in the pack order, so it is very important to be more bossy and demanding from him so he starts to view you differently. Give orders in a firm voice and never ever let him get away with not going what you wanted, chase after him if you must. The following ideas are all about making you and your family pack leader.
    1. You and your family must eat first, as in dog packs the alpha animals eat first, the others get the leftovers. Never give this dogs table scraps, always dog food. When feeding, put the food in his bowl and make him sit a few feet away for at least 2 minutes before telling him too eat.
    2. Don't allow him to sleep on the bed or sit on the couches, these are only alpha positions.
    3. Once a day when he is laying down shuffle into him so he must move, in dog packs the alpha dog takes the best sleeping positions. Stand in this positions for a couple of minutes to enforce it.
    4. Dog obedience is a must, so if you are not going weekly find a club and join. Dogs obey the leader, control is about dominance.
    5. If your dog ignores you force the issue, do not repeat, just go to him and make him do what you want.

    6. Dogs don't like the sound of coins in a plastic bottle, so you can have this ready and then give it a shake or even throw it near him if he is being disobedient.
    7. Before playing or giving attention make him earn it by doing obedience, only 2 minutes still enforces who is boss. so before playing ball make him drop, sit, come, then comes play
I hope this all helps, just remember if you expect to be obeyed and demand it, he is more likely to do what you want. Alpha leadership is a state of mind.
However, since your dog is showing real violence, I would really recommend you get professional help from a dog trainer/behaviourist.

  • I know this response may get a bad reaction from people as a lot here seem to think any kind of physical discipline is wrong, but in reality your best bet is to smack him extremely hard on the behind, our dog a bull mastiff became like this when he was young as well he would growl and become aggressive when we tried to take him into the house and he wanted to stay outside he even bit my mother once. He was also extremely aggressive and possessive when near his food bowl.

So we disciplined him physically I know people say a spray with a water bottle or something similar is just as effective but in my experience it is not, aggression issues have to be dealt with by showing him who's boss and that can only be done through physical discipline. You are not trying to cause him any harm just some discomfort so stick to hitting his bottom barehanded and only when he is being overly aggressive do not use this as a standard form of punishment for anything else and never ever strike him with an object or hit his nose it can cause him serious harm.

Make sure to spend adequate time training him to do tricks and the like and use positive reinforcement when he does as you ask this will also reinforce your alpha position. Also if the behavior continues neutering may help.

  • You might not believe this but St Bernards are in the top 10 most dangerous dog breeds in the UK. I could not believe it when I found out. My Akita breed came in at number 10 after the St Bernard. This means that they can be a threat even though most people would think they are just big softies. Apparantly not.

Your dog probably thinks he is in control. You must show the dog who is boss. The best way to do this is through 1) Exercise 2) Making the dog wait for it's food and sit down whilst waiting. 3) Everytime the dog bites scream like your really hurt Ooooouchhhh. And then give the dog no attention at all. The dog will soon realise that it has done something wrong and will stop the behaviour. Also - with such a large breed you might be best getting in a professional Dog trainer to help you.

  • If you have Nat Geo go on the show Cesar Milan. He is an awesome trainer. For what little I know about dogs he appears to have no respect for you as a pack leader. There are so many possibilities here but I would suggest that you get a dog trainer and have them work with you. It is you that needs the training. I have 2 Rotties and I am still learning everyday what it is to be a pack leader.
