What would yield the best EQM from LAX to IAD on UA? I think it is LAX-SFO-PHL-IAD. What about the return? Travel limitation would be one day out and one day back. Just want to make sure I am not missing anything.

  • I am looking for the same but backwards. Let's say from IAD or JFK to SAN and back. I will have to do a transatlantic via FRA beforehand. :) :)
Thanks to all for your suggestions and ideas. I think I can do all that is on this thread, only backwards? ^
Could spend the extra US$100 or so and start at LAX or SAN? :)

Problem is fares in/out of IAD are high now due to the destruction of FlyI, but transiting through to go to a secondary airport such as PHL, ORF or PVD is at the same rate as it would be through ORD, lets say.

  • Just a guess....routing should be similar on S and T fares, if available.

  • Try MIA or one of the florida stops ... that'll probably get your better cpms. Ex. LAX-SFO-MIA-IAD.

  • ideal would be IAD-BOS-SFO-LAX. Can maybe squeeze another segment in, or start/end at SNA or ONT for more segments

In addition to the miles do I also get 1 segment credit for each leg of the flight?

Ever consider using DEN? Something like LAX-SFO-DEN-LGA-IAD? Or how about LAX-SFO-DEN-SAT-ORD-IAD?

  • Yeah, i know what you mean.. I've had a to do that as well to preserve a fare but if it's at all avoidable, avoid DEN and ORD.. most MR noobs don't know that tidbit which is why I mentioned it.

    You still at UCSD?

    To the OP:
I should also add, if you're a segment runner, stopping in DEN is almost always a must. At the most, stopping in DEN adds $55 (I believe thats the DEN stopover fee) that virtually all east-west domestic UA fares have.

Also, if you're gunning for the DEN promo, I purchased a SAN-DEN rt, then a DEN-SEA rt and 2 DEN-PHX. Look at the fares for the promo cities, as you can usually find ~$200-300 for a r/t, cheaper with Saturday night stays. I managed to fly SEA-GEG-DEN and one DEN-LAX-PHX to pad. I spent less than $1000, and picked up all 90000 miles that I could earn, plus about 7200 EQMs. <$0.01 RDM

  • stopping in DEN rarely, if ever, adds substantial mileage to a MR.

Doing the stop in SAT from SFO n/s vs. SFO-DEN-SAT is ~300 miles. May not be worth the extra 3 hours that may take.

Going north-south-north again isn't a bad idea for a MR if you can swing the routing through a place like SAT (SAN-DFW-ORD-MIA type routings are found on AA a lot), but stopping in DEN rarely yields more mileage.

This is true, but sometimes is necessary. SAN-DEN-DFW-ORD is better than SAN-ORD. It also has been necessary for me to stop in DEN in order to fly SFO-LAX-SAN while preserving the fare.

  • My best yield continues to be SAN-LAX-SFO-JFK-IAD (~4313nm). You would do a little better if you flew to BOS instead of JFK.

Travel must start at LAX. I looked at the routing and I didn't think I could get all the way from lax-SFO-JFK-IAD on the same day. I will re-examine.

A redeye will be necessary to do that.

Don't think there's any other way to do it w/o a red-eye and more than one connection.

cstead's routing is the best i've ever done as well, FWIW. I've done it a little differently but did SAN-LAX-SFO-IAD-PHL a few weeks ago (had to go to PHL anyways).

    Yes.

  • Back during the double EQMs last year, I flew SAN-LAX-SFO-IAD and SAN-LAX-MCO then jumped up to JFK and flew PS back (I flew back on a 3-class 763 for the other IAD run). Any time you can squeeze ps service or 3-class in, don't get greedy for more and just take the nicer flight! I will sacrifice extra segments if I can get a seat in C for cheap. And a ps segment is ~2500 miles as it is.

If you really want distance, wait until fall/winter fares set in. Last winter I was seeing SAN-TPE B fares with routing through HNL and JFK. I was tempted, but it took 3 days each way to fly and I didn't have the time.

  • What's the best routing anyone's gotten on the way back? There's considerably more time because of the time change...

  • The most comfortable routing imo is LAX-SNA-SFO-JFK-IAD.

you can also substitute SBA for SNA (or even SAN), but with SBA you are stuck on regionals and with SAN you make the distance longer without gaining mileage. plus PS on the transcon!

  • LAX-SEA-SFO 1st is a good way to start for more miles.

Normally ^^, but appears to be :( on this one, if my routing rules are comprehensive for this fare. GEG anyone? ;)
