Does you dad (or mom, for that matter) say anything before they spank you? Like "This will hurt me more than it hurts you" (yeah, right!) or "Assume the position," or "Drop 'em!" or "Let's get this over with." Last time I got a belting my dad said, "You know what to do." He's never claimed it would hurt him more than me but I have been told to "Drop 'em"!
whenever i have spanked my son, i just grabbed him and swatted him. no words or explanations necessary.

I prefer "if you can't hear you can feel" its an old Southern term I learned in North Carolina and is totally to the point!

I say "you can avoid this by ___" and be sure he or she knows the reason for the punishment. In our house spanking is a last resort, used only for actions which hurt or could have hurt the child or someone else.
Great question! This is actually more important than the actual spanking. I always tried to give lots of build-up, you know, a slow walk to the room, all the while saying in a calm voice how many spanks they were going to have (1 for each year of age), how much I despised that I had to spank them, but it was necessary because of _______. Then a good, long talk prior to the spanking about the behavior I expected versus what had actually happened. The emotionaly build-up is what makes it truly memorable for them..
Say I actually lost my mind for a moment and hit my child. I'm sure their words to me would be: "Mommy, why don't you love us? Why are you hurting me?" I would kill myself before I ever abused my child.
My parents never hit me, so why would I hit my children?

My mom told me to go find the implement she'd be woopin me with. That's pretty traumatic crap for a child, not only was I about to get my butt beat but I had to choose what to be spanked with....and if it wasn't up to her standards she'd give me more.
As far as my own kids are concerned, I tell them to do something and then if they don't immediately jump to it I start counting 3.....2......walk toward them.....1 and then just pop their butts if they still haven't responded. My eldest lies a lot and that's the only thing he gets spanked for and I always tell him before hand, "If you would have just told the truth we wouldn't have to do this."
In all actuality it does hurt the parent, emotionally, to spank their child (at least in my case and I know in my mom's case as well) and to me, emotional pain can be worse than physical because the physical will heal, the emotional won't. It hurts to punish our children at all, but in the long run that emotional hurt is a lot better than what can happen to our children had they not been properly disciplined as little ones.
