A person of average intelligence is likely to excel in an art class, whereas a person of above-average intelligence may struggle with Relativistic Physics. Girls take fluffier classes than boys (disproportionately majoring in topics like communications or art) who tend to major in hard sciences that are more challenging. On the whole, girls' degrees are worth less because, though they graduate in larger numbers, the topics of study in which they graduate are simply not very challenging. So your premise that "girls do better than boys at school" is flawed.
Tracey: Out of curiosity, why does your statistic refer only to "white males", but refers simply to "females" and not "white females"?
Teachers expect less from the boys. But public school is a more girl-friendly learning environment. It is a fact that young boys have a harder time sitting still and paying attention in school. It is not because they are less intelligent, or even less interested in learning. It's because they have more energy and a greater need to burn it off than little girls do. Instead of working with this, teachers instead punish boys for being boys. Most of the kids taking ritalin for ADD and ADHD are boys.

That quote about boys not being able to cope with more demanding work is really sad. Boys *can* do it! But they aren't given the help they need to do it! With such low expectations of male students I'm not surprised that that teacher finds them meeting it. This kind of thing is one reason why we decided to homeschool our kids. I will not punish my son because he has more trouble sitting still than his sister - instead, I can work with that and not leave him feeling like a failure for being a normal healthy male.

If the curriculum was set towards boys learning habits, then the girls would be sitting there twiddling there thumbs. What does that say for your flawed argument.
It's important to note that every study has found that boys' performance in school hasn't changed. Girls have merely improved theirs (in ALL subjects...math, science, language) and far surpassed the boys.
So the complaints that teachers aren't teaching in a way that benefits boys is an excuse and doesn't hold water.

Yes - I really do think so. My friend's son is a genius (literally - he has the certificates to prove it) but since he went to senior school his work has deteriorated to a shocking level. And this from a boy who would get 100% in every exam.
Now for some exams he gets 26% - because he can't be bothered. It's a real pity - especially as he used to dream of being a pilot.
No that is mainly one journalists opinion and the British Labour Government has no credibility when it comes to gender and equality thanks to Harman. In fact, it looks like the labour govs liberal policies have done a good job creating social havoc in the UK.

Liberal policies = social problems + failure of boys in feminized education system = lad culture
is the more likely reality.
Also, the journalist seems to be completely unaware of the new debate and research into the effect that the feminized education system has on boys, so he is not doing his job properly.

No I don't, I know there has being some talk of it though. Id hate to see the cane and adhd drugs being used on boys who are acting out for the want of a strong male influence, and boredom with an education system tailor made for girls. I think that every school should have strong male teachers, but they have been run out of the profession and masculinity is seen as something that should be socialised out of existance by the feminist sisterhood that controls our education system.

EDIT. That was then, this is now.... I'm not looking a past vs present or male vs female. I'm just looking at what is wrong now, and you should be too.

as an ex lecturer , i found that most boys are bound up in macho group culture, and dont wish to display learning desires before the group.
This then leads to pressures exerted by the dominant males to ensure the following of the group, IE Bullying .
This is starting to show in some of the female groups also now so we may see some changes in that area in the future.
The answer for this problem is return to Discipline in the classroom , as is being shown by the move by Secondary teachers for the return of the cane.
It is only a minority who cause disruption and mostly boys ,the only answer is they must be contolled,
it is totally wrong to accept that boys are less able , they may mature and learn at differing rates to the girls , but they are just as able if they can escape the male group pressures.
Also the family pandering to male children especialy in the wealthy middle classes , makes them believe they have no need to learn as they already know all they need(wrong).IE too much money too little parental control.
Girls already know they have a big social attitude against them so need to work harder to succeed.
No, it's because people are judged by their ability to learn, not their ability.
NOTE: Ability to learn doesn't equal intelligence.
EDIT: No, quite the contrary; it's about the application of said knowledge. And that's their ability. Also, ability reaches beyond that which is taught in schools.
And we all know we hardly apply anything learned in middle school. Which is one of the greatest arguments against current education, I.M.O.

Boys do better at science and math. Girls do better at reading & english. That's what I've noticed. Boys are hands on learners, so they do better with things like that.
It seems that the opposite is actually true. Far from being torpid, boys need to be more active in class, and classrooms are set up to favor a female learning style.
No, quite to the contrary, fewer than 10% of people working towards a PhD in the hard sciences are women.
All people learn differently. I test all of my advisees and have them take a learning styles test.
I craft my courses to bring a mix to the students - they can all get at least a B if they at least try! Some students do not want to try.
As for middle school and elementary we need to go back to recess to burn off that energy. I wish The Mrs was here today she could tell you how letting kids run around helps them settle down to learn. And we put little kids into middle schools where they would be better off in K to 8th grade schools.

boys and girls do have different brains! and all children should be educated in a manner which suits their capabilities
