well, i don't what country you are from. in australia we have enrolled nurses, which are lower level nurses and then RN's which are the higher level nurses. to be an RN in australia, you need to go to university for three years (for about nine months a year), or you can do it part time, but over a longer period of time and you graduate as a general registered nurse. if you want to specialise here, they prefer you have a few years (usually at least two) on the floor, either doing generalised nursing or working on a ward that involves the specialty you wish to pursue. you then need to go back to university and do a post graduate degree of usually six months to a year in duration to complete you specialist qualification. some specialisations you can do just by working on the ward for a few years and being able to display that you have extensive knowledge in the area. but they specialisation would only be relevant to that hospital.
as for the family practice, i don't know.
talk to a college counselor first. you will have pre reqs to complete before applying to a program.
