  • Flying a bit faster::
    File Format: Microsoft Word - View as HTMLMc = 4 “If 400 feet higher, I would expect to finish one minute sooner.” This trades extra altitude for extra time at 400 ft/min. Settings are substantially lower than best climb in best thermal of the day. You get range by planning to slow down / take weaker lift as you get lower.

    Magnetic Diffusion and Its Applications in Bulk High-T ::
    File Format: PDF/Adobe Acrobat - View as HTMLexperiment, there is practically no time delay between the NI and the H peaks. placed between the copper coil and the Hall probe, it slows down the speed considerably because the superconductor has a resistivity much lower than that of either air . DOES time SLOW down on a higher office on the 111th floor than my office in the mail room office on the 1st floor?

    How do we know?

    What is this called? it's not time dilation surely..

  • It's gravitational time dilation (cf. General Relativity).
    Atomic clocks that record times at high accuracy have been used to demonstrate its validity. Not familiar with the mathematical underpinnings of it all, but there you go.

    Chuck
    It's the other way around. Relativistic effects don't come into play at the low speeds (relative to light) of airplanes. The variation in gravitational fields with respect to altitude is the primary factor.

  • There'd be two forces to work with - higher rotational velocity (relative to planet center), and reduced gravity (again, due to being farther from earth's center). The difference for both is so minor that the difference can't be measured with current instruments. It has been verified with atomic clocks placed on planes, but that's due to speed, not altitude.
