  • In some categories--especially Science & Mathematics--there are communication problems because of nonstandard notation. It can be a greater challenge to figure out what an asker means than to answer the question!

    Communication could be enhanced with the use of HTML, LaTeX, BB, or some similar markup

    For example: A simple equation (read "y equals x squared") is notated like this:

    y = x^2

    I think this is the best practice. It's unambiguous and clear.

    But, to those unfamiliar with conventions, it's illegible. Some prefer to use this notation:

    y = x²

    ... because it closely approximates mathematical notation. However, I'm not sure whether it can be read properly in all operating systems.

    Naive users might use this notation:

    y = x2

    ... which can often be deciphered, but is ambiguous and confusing, especially in more complex equations.

    Now, If something such as this:

    y = x2

    ... could be rendered properly, with a wysiwyg editor, these problems would disappear.

  • I have often thought this myself. I find it very odd that HTML isn't supported. Also if you copy and paste your answer into email after having used sybols like ± √ ² ³ ⁴½ ¼ or ∫ it comes out as complete gobbledegook!
    I have collected symbols as I have seen tham (as I dont know and have never looked up the ascii codes for them). I always keep a word file open with my symbols in it so I can copy and paste them into my answers.

    I know I haven't really answered your question, but I have a lot of thoughts on the matter to add!
    Like earlier I answered a very simple multichoice question on order of operations that said: which operation do you preform first: 3(7 + 22) 5
    A) 7 + 2
    B) 22
    C) 3 7 and 3 2
    D) 11 5
    but no option for 7 + 22
    I figured out after answering some more questions by the same person that 22 actually meant 2²!!!!
    But really the thing i want most is for people to learn how to use brackets properly!!
    How are you supposed to interpret something like
    x + 9 / x - 3 / x + 7 - x / x - 8 when it is meant to be
    (x + 9) / x - 3 / (x + 7) - x / (x - 8)
    Even that looks a little ambiguous, one time I went so far as to use an equation editor to type my answer then made that a jpeg file and uploaded it using flickr just so I could make it readable!
    EDIT
    Yes I guess, but I like √(x + 2) better :)
    I think part of the problem with brackets is these new calculators that bracket automatically for peolpe, or do fractions where you arrow around to get between the numerator and the denominator. Students with those dont get the same understanding that we got with our basic calcuators.
    I dont remember my calculator at school having a degrees minutes seconds button either and we had to manual convert by subtracting the integer part and multiplying by 60 etc...
    But now I'm really babbling!
    Hey thanks for the new character for my collection, I didn't have ⅔ before!
