I want to get a marketing/advertising/PR/event planning internship this summer in New York
do you think places will take me only for the 2nd half of the summer?

I did two internships in NY, each for only 6 weeks. One was in film making production and the other was for a nonprofit.
You can likely find many companies who need interns for shorter periods of time. It will just take some research. More structured firms may have a lengthy and competitive interview process and require an entire summer from you for credit, but the way to avoid that is to look for advertising/PR firms that aren't as large but can offer just as much experience. My internship experience was invaluable - and both companies were very small. I got my hands in a lot more projects that way. I don't think I suffered at all by not working summer long internships at huge, well-known companies. Instead, I got two internships at the "price" of one and built up my resume tremendously. I highly recommend it.
I would recommend researching your favorite creative firms and sending your resume and cover letter to the hiring managers directly. Let them know UP FRONT that you are seeking an internship for the 2nd half of the summer.

From my experiences, no. Many internship programs start off with a period of training and then comes the actual work from the internship. By starting late, you would have missed out on the important information they began with, and would be behind. My advice: find a regular job (full or part-time) that is similar to what you wanted for an internship. The experience is what counts, not what the position is called. Good Luck!
