  • to treat my anxiety, I heard drinking Kava is great. I am thinking of bringing it to work in a regular coffee cup and drinking that instead of coffee. Does anyone have an experiences with kava? Does it have a weird odor or anything that my coworkers will find offensive?

  • Kava is an excellent herb to help treat your anxiety. There really is nothing quite like it. I think its perfectly fine to drink kava at work or any other place or time you need it.

It does have a distinct fragrance that might make your co-workers wonder what you're drinking, though its not an unpleasant odor. To avoid this you could add a chai tea bag to your kava, since the spices in it will overpower the kava smell. I find they also taste really nice together.

This is how I prepare my kava as a drink.

    1) per cup of water add 1 tsp kava root and 1 tbsp coconut milk (the active principles in kava are not water soluble, so the fat in coconut milk helps to extract it. It makes it taste better too) You could use cream instead if you like.

    2) cover the pot and bring to a boil

    3) as soon as it starts boiling, turn the heat way down and simmer for 15-20 minutes then remove from heat. You can either strain it right away or wait a few hours for a stronger brew.

I sometimes also make kava macaroons (damn they're tasty) by adding powdered kava to a recipe at a rate of 1/4 tsp per 1" macaroon. These offer a nice small dose whenever you need to take the edge off just a little bit throughout the day.

In response to the people who say kava will make you sleepy - that's all a matter of dosage. Smaller doses will help to relax you while your mind stays sharp, larger doses will affect your motor coordination and put you to sleep.

To figure out how kava affects you, try it at home... one day with 1/2 tsp, next day 1 tsp and so on. Then you'll know for certain how much you will need to get the effects you want. Oh, and don't worry about the numbing sensation in your mouth, that's normal.

As for the FDA warnings - they're rather misleading. The people in those 'studies' either had a history of alcohol abuse or had Hep C, cirrhosis or another pre-existing liver disease. Tylenol is worse on your liver than kava could ever be :)

I would recommend you purchase your kava from a reputable source. I don't trust much of what I see on the market. Mountain Rose Herbs' kava is excellent in quality and price. I deal with them pretty exclusively for any herbs I don't harvest myself. http://www.mountainroseherbs.com/bulkher...

  • Wouldn't it be better to try out at home first to see what sort of reaction you get? Although it's legal, as far as I know it's a very relaxing alternative substance and you may become to lethargic or sleepy, depending on how you react to it. Surely you'd be better off trying it out first and see if you like it and what it smells like before you take it anywhere near the office.

  • For your info, here is a link to the FDA kava health warning:

  • would you think it ok to drink whiskey at work ? then whats the difference.surely your not serious.please don't think im being nasty.but kava if we are talking about the same thing is really easy to smell and is really intoxicating.

  • just drink it one day your not at work, see how it affects you and smells

  • Kava is something that puts one to sleep! If you drink that at work you won't get much work done. Do what the chinese do use Ginseng it is the solution it will balance out the whole body!

  • It smells and tastes terrible. It does nothing for my anxiety, but I have heard some people say it really helps them. It is sedating for some people, so you should try it at home before you do it at work. Why make yourself all sleepy during a work day? I doubt your co-workers will smell it, unless they put their face right over your cup, and I hope no one at your work would do that.

  • This will work only if your boss answers the question. I'm guessing you have caught him or her (probably a her) on yahoo! answers during work. In that case, what the hell kind of boss are you working for?
