Only for to achieve their goal to win
traditionally, it has been in the nature of such competitions to achieve the required distance in a shorter interval of time. considering the scientific formula: distance = velocity / time, and manipulating it through mathematical manipulations, we obtain velocity = distance / time and time = distance / velocity. so for time to be smaller, the velocity has to be greater. in other words, the greater the velocity the less time the runner takes to complete the predetermined distance. considering the distance is fixed, that's the only way out for the athlete. of course, if you're wondering quite why these olympians et al even bother with finishing it in lesser time and suchlike, it can all be put down to their hurried schedule. consider the items they compete in in a single day and what-not else they have to be doing after their races. it forces them to spend less time in each event, thereby needing to run it "faster".
