The Sydney Morning Herald Blogs: Ask Sam:: *several years down the track after she dumps me by text message and I am no longer getting any, it is little wonder I am the most surly person I know. http://blogs.smh.com.au/lifestyle/asksam/archives/2007/10/which_is_the_rudest_city.htmlHOME | My understanding is that some stuff that use to be used are no longer advisable, because of allergic reactions (Neosporin and Bacitrin), Petroleum products - that smother the tattoo and not let it breathe, and they can harbor germs and are hard to wash off, and more... Also, original bandage should be on for 2 hours, but no more, and the tattoo should not be covered up after that (no saran etc. - leave it open to the air as much as possible)
but the most general current safe and successful method is:
after 2 hrs. take bandage off carefully - if stuck use water don't pull off.
wash hands for 30 sec.s with antibacterial soap, then splash tattoo (no soaking, no direct stream of water) with water and wash with fingers (no cloths) using the antibacterial soap Jihad Watch: May 2007 Archives:: “I’m not aware of any serious discussion to cut off the funding,” Mr. Johndroe said. then pat dry with clean paper towels (no cloth towels)
air dry a minute of two
apply a light coat of Lubriderm unscented (it has healing properties and no reactions from it - it may sting a little)
air dry
if seeping occurs, pat (no rubbing) dry with clean paper towels so that scabs do not form (they can pull color out)
If scabs do form, no worry, but follow same instructions and leave scabs alone - no picking, pulling etc. - if little pieces stick out, use the lotion to kind of pat them down (only cut off it big and very carefully so not to pull anything off that is not ready to come off) Let scabs fall off by themselves.
During healing (2 -3 wks) your tat will look every which way, and wont look pretty after the 1st day. It will be red, swell, peel, form a milky layer of skin, and then turn into regular feeling skin and the colors will show again (but in your skin - not like a sticker)
After healing, you can get touch ups if needed (and start this all over again)
Don't judge your tattoo until it is healed.
After healing (not before, because it can pull color) use high SPF sunblock for life.
While healing - no sun, no swimming, no soaking
Treat it like what it is, an open wound - baby it and it will turn out beautiful.
Usually you can go with your artist's tips, that is the best way. They should give you this after your tattoo, and a card with the information on it. I've taken care of my tattoo by using A+D ointment. I put a thin layer on whenever it seems to get dry. I did this for the first 3 days. Then I switched to an unscented lotion (coco butter is the best).
You'll want to wash it with antibacterial (unscented) soap every day, 3 times a day.
My colors are still as vibrant as the day I got it... which was only really a month ago, but still, I don't remember my dad's ever being like this years ago.
Keep it moisturized, but make sure you don't slather lotion on. Just keep it layered on thin.
Do what your artist tells you to do. And if they dont say anything then ask! But all i will say is never rub your tattoo for at least 2 weeks, or untill it is almost completly healed. This is probably the most common mistake people make over and over again. I cant tell you how many times ive said this. But im not gonna go into the details of why, so the point is. It will fade your tattoo. The propper way is to take your moisterizers and dab it on, and then blot it off.
