You can ask this question all day and get varied answers. Because Subs perform differently with various applications (movies vs music- different genres of music), different room sizes, placement, complimenting different speakers, Etc..
Basically it comes down to what you like. Work with a store that allow you to try different ones before you make a decision. Subs will sound different in your home then they do in the store. And pending on what you listen too, will depend on what sub you'll like over another.

I reccomend you purchase a 12 volt power supply, Pyramid has one that puts out 50 amps for about $150. Then go to a pawn shop and buy a used car sub amp. Names like Sony, Kenwood, Kicker are good. No Boss or Legacy stuff. Then have a nice box built, good enough for in home use at a car stereo store. You could paint it solid black or veneer it. Buy two new car subs and hook them up to it. Plug the subwoofer out RCA jack into your car amp. The impedence of the system wont be a problem as long as you stay at 4 ohms. for a powered sub, those are probably the most expensive type you can get. Try and get a floor model for 10% off.
I would recommend a subwoofer from Definitive Technology Supercube line. $700 would get you a Supercube III. Don't let its small size fool you. That subwoofer has some serious power. If you can get a Supercube II on sale for $700 or a hair more, I would get that.
