I would like to take my granddaughter on a train trip next spring. She will by then be 10. The closest stations are San Jose and Salinas CA (We live in Santa Cruz).
I'm thinking either a trip of around four hours, and then staying at a hotel, or

An overnight trip each way and maybe only a day at the destination, a bus tour, ... .
I really don't want to rent a car.
We have flown together to Boston and driven to the Central CA coast. She flies often to Southern CA to visit her other grandparents, and drives often to Truckee/Reno to visit cousins.

An interesting idea for overnight stay near the station might be the paddlesteamer hotel in the river moored right at old sacramento.
I don't know about prices but I am sure the experience would please any 10 year old!

There's a decent Vagabond Inn across the street from the train station and a short walk from Old Town.
Another train trip might be to Santa Barbara either on the Starlate or by taking an Amtrak Connecting bus to San Luis Obispo.
How about a trip to Old Sacramento? We took my daughter and 7 of her friends there via Amtrak from Lodi for her 11th birthday. It's a short 5 minute walk to Old Sacramento from the train station. The railroad museum is great and the girls loved looking through the shops. Also, a new Embassy Suites opened in Old Sacramento recently so you could spend the night and wouldn't need to rent a car.

Yes, absolutely, Sacramento would be the ideal destination...several trains a day, and a number of things to see within walking distance of the SAC station....Old Sacramento (100 feet!), State Capitol (about 10 minutes away), old Governor's Mansion (withib 15 minutes). Plus shopping at Downtown Plaza (1 block). Several hotels to stay at, including Vagabond across the street, Holiday Inn (2 blocks), plus the new Embassy (5 blocks).
