I am worried about putting her in a Field with other horses?

Welcome to:hznm.com

  • my friend has a mare that she doesn't ride. and i have have decided to take her on as my own and moving her to a yard near my house.

the problem is shes been in a Field on her own for 3 years. i am worried about putting her in a Field with 2 geldings?
    what do you think?
and whats the best way and the safest way to do this?
    thanks

  • She will be fine, they are herd animals. Once the pecking order is established they will all get along fine.

  • This can be a problem especially since it is two geldings. I suggest introducing them over a fence with a gate (preferably electric wire along the fence except at the gate to keep them from kicking the fence and hanging up.) for one month. Then put one gelding in with her (the most docile). After two weeks to a month if all goes well then add the other gelding.

And if the mare has not been ridden for a while do not try riding her into the field with the geldings. You have little idea about what she will do. She could be fine, but if she has been left unridden too long she may get too nervous and freak. I guarantee the geldings will help to agitate her.

Herd animals or not you are introducing a mare into a bachelor herd and there will be squabbles. What you need to do is to make sure the squabbles are relatively minor. I have had horses try to kill each other (one had the other down and was kicking her in the neck and head, with both back feet) and breaking them up is not a fun experience. Thank Heavens I was there to witness the horse go down and to break it up before one killed the other.

Introducing over a gate or fence for two weeks to a month is standard and recommended practice in horse industry.

  • I think that she will be fine. But if there is a field or corral or barn yard beside it then put her in that so they can meet over a fence. If not, you could maybe divide the field if you are allowed. But another good way of doing this, id leading her into the field and let the horse meet each other. If they start getting rough, lead her out. Then wait another couple of minutes then do it again. If they keep getting rough, do it a third time, and if they are still rough, then just let her off the lead and walk out. They will get to know each other and will be fine. And since she is also a mare, she will probably become dominate over them, and she will end up the leader, even though the geldings have been there longer. Good Luck and I hope this helps!

  • i would section the field off so they can get to see each other.
she should be fine to put the together after a few days.
mine had been on her own for along time and just fitted in.
my problem now is doesn't like to be away from them.

  • If possible, put her in a field next to the new horses so they can smell & get to know her. In a few days move her into the field with one of the geldings & then add the other gelding once they're comfortable.

  • she will be fine just let her out with the other horses after a couple of days and then release her with the two geldings and they might bite, kick, etc. but once they settle after about a week it will be ok!

  • Okay, horses are built to be social creatures. If you are nervous, put her next to the geldings in a small pasture or pin or something for a few days and let them "sniff"' eachother.

You should ocmpletely iscolate her at first anyway to make sure that she doesn't get them sick. Also make sure the Coggins is up to date. If you don't know, don't put them together no matter what the owner says. Vaccinations as well. Teatnus, EEE, West Nile, Rhino

So, just throw her in there when you are done with isolation. Seriously. They may fight, they may spazz out. But they will sort it out. Put her in, shut the gate. Stay out of the way. It is part of how they socialize. People who try to "prevent" it and feel sorry for the one that gets beaten up don't quite understand the horse world.

My horse has had the **** kicked out by pasturemates of him more times than I care to count, but it was good for him. He believed he was boss of the world, he actually used to prevent other horses from eating for a week and showed massive amounts of aggression. It helped solve a huge social problem he had, and after a while it stopped because he learned how to play "by the rules". He now socializes better in less dominent settings and has "friends", which he didn't have before.

So even if they are aggressive towards her or visa versa, it is good for them. They thrive.

So yeah, they may fight, they may ignore eachother, they may just spazz a bit, but they will settle and ultimately they will be happier. Hell, it could be all love and nuzzles. Just don't think they are going to hate you or be angry with you or feel sorry for them. They are horses...it is what they do.

  • Is she rideable? If so I would ride her in and just trot around for awhile and watch the reaction of the geldings. Un-mount and just keep an eye on them. Un-saddle her and just walk around on a lead to get her comfortable. I wouldn't really worry about them but just to be safe hang out and let them socialize as they are herd or pack animals. When you feed them do her last. For a few days make sure everyone is happy and getting along. I think no problem.
