They stand on toilets, leave scuff marks on and up the wall, throw ungodly amounts of paper in toilets, throw paper on the floor, write on walls, pee on walls, etc. I have hung signs before but they got torn down and my principal didnt like the way I compounded trashcan...(two words...my bad) on them either. I wish there were signs, but the fact of the matter is that these children don't respect other peoples' property. No signs will help. I did read this story about this janitor who worked in a middle school. He kept getting angry because the little girls would put on lipstick and then kiss the mirrors. He'd clean them off only to have them do it again. So he asked the principal if he could do a demonstration on how difficult it was to clean the mirrors. He got all the girls into the bathroom for the demonstration. He took his rag, dunked it in the toilet, and then cleaned the mirror. There wasn't any lipstick there anymore. if you start cleaning them, they will be appreciated and welcomed by all and they will start cleaning by using them properly.
I think rather than just putting up signs, some education is in order here. This sounds like a rampant problem that the principal is aware of, so maybe you and the teaching staff can get together on this one and start talking to the kids. Not just you, because, historically, kids tend to not respect school janitors (though if they knew what you guys make, that would shut them up quick!) I suggest speaking to the Principal about getting maybe the health teachers and school nurse on board to help you come up with an education campaign to get the kids to understand the health issues and maybe some etiquette (not sure of the age level of the kids, so I can't be really specific). Talk to your principal about making the kids using the restroom clean it when it is like that. See if the principal will talk to the students about cleanliness. Tell him its unbearable. They are showing no respect to the schools property.
