It's said that the total number of medals is proportionate with the population of the country (meaning more talented athletes), economy (more money to train athletes), and many other factors.

  • Australias population compared to its medal count is above any other nation. Something to think about.

  • Capster, I am very appreciative of your response. How my comment made you "quite disturbed" makes this website so valuable, in that what I consider harmless honest point of view, can be taken to agitate persons into some dis-comfort zone, on the other side of the world! Wow, I had THAT MUCH effect
on someone? My wife validly believes, I only put people to sleep!
And I hope you have recovered to full functionality, but if I polled the Japanese athletes, "Do you think there is too much emphasis on one country winning the Olympic medal numbers game?", I think the answer would be overwhelmingly YES, YES, YES!
And the technology and the hardship that Olympic teams put on some of these individuals is ghastly, the worst example being Saddam Hussein allegedly torturing to death some athlete who didn't win a medal, and the recent case of some alleged 13 year olds removed from their family for over a year prior to them winning under the cloud of "too young" accusations.
Winning is being able to compete at any level, for which I cannot, and the competitors are the heros, not just the exceptional individuals who took Gold, Silver, Bronze. I can't turn the channel fast enough when I hear some commentator say... "And that gives the USA xxx medals against China's yyy medals, we are so much better than the rest of the world, blah, blah, blah" Such arrogant displays only serve to diminish the true intent of the Olympic games... to put all your abilities of oneself, against all the abilities of the next individual, and measure our spirit and courage and strength and humanity, not one culture versus another culture.
Capster, you are the greatest, I owe you lunch, what is your favorite restaurant, and the check is in the mail!

  • When the one win, the other defeat

    Shocking soccer defeat
Japan's women's soccer team won 5-1 over Norway on Tuesday.

It was a good game to Japan.

  • I voted 10 Gold Medals as Japanese Olympic Committee said they aim to get ten at least.

But I think it is not easy goal because Japan is not good at Jyudo anymore.

Meatime, how did Germany improve Jyudo ? Yesterday, a German guy won gold medal for Jyudo, didn't he?

  • Are they really the top at anything? I know Kitajima is the best in what he does and they are good enough to get a medal in gymnastics, but is there anything else? >.<

  • Does anyone else out there cringe when one country like the United States, wins too many medals?
God Bless the courageous winners, fine, but isn't there a point where enough is healthy enough? And then I want other countries to share equally in the glory!
And then we read stories about, oh, America won 112 medals.
Remind me one more time, why I should care?
I get truly excited when one Afghan person, won one medal. I am thrilled.
Or when a Kenya guy won one medal. Beautiful.
There is a limit to this numbers game, which is overall meaningless in my book.
Congratulations on all countries who participated, and all persons who competed, they are the gold medal winners in my books, doing things I can only dream about.

Not really. Im quite disturbed by your comment that you cringe when you hear about your own country winning medals. Is it possable to win to many medals? Id like you to ask that question to the athletes we send to represent us. What do you think their answer will be? Ask any countries athletes that question. Granted, I do like to hear of sucess stories from unlikely winners. Everyone likes to see the underdog win every once in awhile.

  • Duplicate post, sorry.

    Australians are good at Swimming.
They must be training at Gold Coast every day.

Australians may be good at field & track ... probably because they can do training in a big natural field as it is a land of Aussie Beef.

If I am wrong, please never mind. :relief:
