Introducing Dogs into a Home with Cats:: I normally wait several weeks before I allow the dog to have on Take the dog out on a long line in an area where there are cats. Watch the dog closely. http://leerburg.com/dog-cat.htmHOME | How long should I wait to take the dog from the mom. it will hopefully be a female golden retriver. If it is a liter of all boys we will have to go with a boy. But how long should we wait before we take the dog from the mom. We know the breeder as she is giving it to us. What are the pros and cons of keeping it longer and taking it away earily ?????
please Help!!!!!!!!!!!
There's no pros to taking it earlier. Wait till at least 8 wks, 10 wks is even better. If you leave it with the mom longer, you'll get a better rounded, more sociable puppy. If not, you could get a pup with problems like excessive nipping/biting, barking, etc.
8 weeks or older
The puppy should be at least 8 weeks old, preferably 10 or 12 weeks. Please don't take it away any earlier.
NEVER before 8 weeks of age. The pup learns alot from the rest of the litter and starts to learn socialization skills. 8 weeks at least, but 12 weeks is best.
the law states (in almost every place) that the minimum wait is 6 weeks, although if the breeder is reputable, they would wait untill atleast 8 weeks.
taking a puppy away early will usually end up with social issues, chewing problems, etc.
8-12 weeks, NO sooner.
No earlier than 8 weeks- 12 weeks is desirable- your puppy learns so much about socialization and puppy manners from it's mother and litter mates in that 4 weeks-
6 weeks is WAY too young! If the *breeder* is giving them away at 6 weeks- RUN- your chances of having an unsocialized, scared, sickly dog are increased dramatically!
I say 12 to 15 weeks.
Eight weeks is the legal age acceptable. However, around eight weeks is very important for the puppy. The puppies start to learn more from its mom and litter mates as this age. I would get the pup at twelve weeks at the very youngest.
Puppies should ideally stay with the mom and the litter at the very least 8 weeks old. 10 to 12 weeks is best IF there is alot of proper, positive socialization being done and they are not just there for the sake of being there.
During these weeks, puppies learn critical skills such as bite inhibition which is best learned through play and interaction with the mom and littermates. They also learn important social skills and developmental stimulation.
Puppies have a window of development allowing for socialization and therefore should be exposed safely to new things, different people, noises, situations, flooring, toys, other friendly, healthy dogs and animals and physical handling. If few of these things are done or worse, introduced negatively, the puppy can develop fear issues which can eventually manifest into aggression.
I suggest that purchase the book "Before and After You Get Your Puppy" by Dr. Ian Dunbar which you can find at www.dogwise.com and prepare yourself for your new puppy.
Good luck!
My mother is a dog breeder and the earliest shes ever let one go, is 6 weeks but that was to a friend up the road, and so the puppy still saw its mother. For anyone else the puppy can leave at 8 weeks.
8-12 weeks minimum. The puppy needs the social skills it will gain from interacting with mom and littermates during that crucial window of opportunity. They learn things like bite inhibition and how to interact with other dogs. Without this, dogs can be shy, fearful, or just not know how hard is too hard to bite in play (ouch!). For a happy, well-adjusted dog in the long run, leave it with its mother and brothers and sisters as long as possible.
6 weeks or older
i'd question the breeder if he doesn't know the age to give up the puppy....ask him if the parents were health tested...i doubt it..
Pups shouldn't leave their moms until 8-12 weeks. They learn essential social skills, build up their immune systems at this time. Waiting till 12 weeks is a major plus. You will most likely have a healthy, well adjusted pup that is ready to come live with your family. Taking the pup away prior to 8 weeks sets it up for all kinds of health, emotional, and behavior problems.
wait at least 6 weeks, the longer they stay with their mom the healthier the puppy will be. meanwhile, im sure you can visit your puppy and pick one out.
How can I persuade my mom into getting me a dog?
Any one have any suggestions for convincing your mom to let you get a dog?
